Rubber Plan Defended in Senate Rubber Policy Debate
Washington July 20 The administration defended Donald M. Nelsons centralized control of the synthetic rubber program against a Senate farm bloc attack while farm group support grew with Republican backing. Barkley of Kentucky said he would oppose a move to create an independent rubber supply agency to direct production from grain alcohol, a plan Nelson opposes as diluting responsibility for key wartime output. The Agriculture Committee reported that quickest synthetic rubber production with minimal critical materials comes from converting grain or forest alcohol to butadiene, the main rubber ingredient.
