WPA Pay Hike Announced For Panhandle WPA Workers

The rate of pay for Works Progress Administration workers in the Panhandle has been raised to prevailing local wages. Skilled workers earn about a dollar an hour, while unskilled are paid 30 cents and intermediate 45 cents. The change reduces income per hour but allows shorter hours, with many workers now able to seek permanent or temporary work beyond project duties. A state WPA announcement from San Antonio, plus a Panhandle conference of over 150 project supervisors, outlined new regulations and wage schedules affecting 2,322 employees on 78 projects across 20 counties.
