The first full plainsman of the Texas Plainsmen Navy Aviation Squadron returns to Amarillo from Dallas after top exam results. Jack Osborne of Miami becomes the first assistant recruiter, while 19 more Panhandle youths seek the coveted squadron spots. 60 will be selected for three months of training at the University of Georgia with ground school before August 17 departure.
James S. Reger, associate water planning analyst with the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, told Amarill o Real Estate Board luncheon that the High Plains rely on local rainfall for ground water. He cited his work with the U S Geological Survey and other agencies and warned that water from wells can affect underground levels, outlining possible irrigation impacts.
Lieutenant Bob Miller of the Texas Defense Guard announces a lowered enlistment age of 16 with parental consent. He heads the guard band and urges all members to attend weekly meetings. The city gains between 5500 and 6000 dollars from 10400 bushels of wheat grown at the Amarillo Army Technical School site east of English Field. Harvested last night to prevent fire risk, the grain sold on the open market at 87 to 92 cents per bushel. City Manager Austin P. Hancock notes profit from the crop while Purchasing Agent Jesse Pate acted as vendor.
Rex Baxter Amarillo Chamber of Commerce manager will leave tomorrow for Dallas to attend the Southwestern School for Commercial Executives. The Amarilloan will join the faculty and the school gathers chamber officials and executives from Texas Missouri Arkansas New Mexico Oklahoma Louisiana and Kansas. Baxter also plans talks in Fort Worth with FHA officials and in Dallas with officials of the National Housing Authority about Amarillo housing in the defense area.
The House cleared the way for final enactment of the stalled 1943 Agriculture Department supply bill by backing a Senate proposal to permit sale of 125 million bushels of government-held surplus wheat at 65 percent of current price, resolving the impasse.
