Ninety two prisoners crowded the aging city jail on Wednesday morning, a record well above the 48 cell capacity. Most fined for drunkenness, the crowd stems from a police drive on panhandling. City manager Moss says next budget will address jail size and offices will relocate to free space for expansion.
TEL AVIV July 14 Jewish forces captured Shafa Amr a main Arab base 10 miles east of Haifa in a new offensive from Haifa. The raid on Haifa port prompted heavy anti aircraft fire and high flying planes with unclear nationality. Syrian defenses retreated as Jewish troops seized strategic heights in the northeast.
Texas Gov. Beauford H. Jester said he would support Sen. Alben Barkley despite Barkley disavowal as a presidential candidate. The Texas convention debated tidelands planks and a two thirds rule reform as delegates weighed the Barkley surge and wavering support for Gov. Laney.
Cherryhomes pulled ahead on the second day of Jaycees straw voting leading sheriff candidate J. C. Vaughn by 13 votes with Bramblett and Halley trading leads in precinct contests. Lumpkin leads Northcutt for the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals and Simpson tops Timmons in the state race. Jaycees report strong turnout and consider extra ballots and a second booth to manage the rush.
At the Philadelphia convention session the Democratic platform battle heated over racial equality and states rights. A minority report urged explicit states rights language while others backed universal civil rights. Truman's nomination for president and Barkley for VP appeared secure despite Southern opposition.

In Rome and other cities workers abandon jobs as Communist led National Labor Federation plans an indefinite nationwide general strike after the assassination attempt on Palmiro Togliatti. Doctors say Togliatti received transfusions and has grave but not desperate prognosis. The would be attacker from Randazzo Sicily claimed no party ties and acted on personal belief he was fighting an enemy of the country.
Amarillo officials favor consolidating city and school tax collection offices to improve efficiency convenience and economy. City manager N V Moss says the plan mirrors Waco where the city collects taxes for both entities with a one percent fee from the school district.
With about 24 hours left before the Community Chest balloting, fewer than 100 votes have been registered. Jesse A. Rogers, nominating committee representative, notes the election aims to choose a 15 member board for the Chest's operations next year. The ballot lists 52 names and all contributors are eligible to vote.
The weatherman warns further heat through Friday as temperatures stay in the mid nineties. A cooling break is not forecast and precipitation remains absent.
City commission acted last year to locate a fire station on the Tri-State Fair grounds contingent on county approval for a suitable building. County commissioners on Tuesday authorized Johnnie Morris to negotiate with the city for a station in East Amarillo near the fair grounds. Moss said the city has an extra fire truck and crew ready to move once quarters are provided.
