Tonight unsettled with scattered showers in parts of Texas Panhandle and East Texas. Friday mostly fair and warmer in West Texas and Oklahoma with cooler readings in extreme north. Light to moderate southerly winds on the coast, temperatures rising from 66 tonight to around 80 by afternoon.
John J. Raskob newly elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee assigns Nellie Tayloe Ross former Wyoming governor as director of all women’s activities. She will be aided by Florence Farley with both women serving as National committee members and vice chairmen.
ELAN ORCUTT HITS CONCRETE BRIDGE IN CAR CHILDRESS, Tex., July 12. Elan Orcutt, 35, a farmer near Estelline, Texas, was probably fatally injured when his automobile struck a concrete bridge near his home. He was taken to a Childress hospital for treatment.
John J. Raskel, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, began a series of conferences with leaders to refine the party’s campaign strategy. The agenda centers on tightening prohibition enforcement in the East and farm relief in the West amid party and third party activity. Senator Norris faces an uncertain Farer-Labor nomination, with a platform urging strict law enforcement. Hoover outlines a westward trip for official nomination. prohibition remains a nonpartisan issue per Anti-Saloon League chief.
The effort to oust Lynn P. Talley from the Eleventh Federal Reserve Bank governorship ends as W. W. Woodson, president of the stockholders association, announces the campaign’s conclusion. J. Y. Williams of Mineral Wells says the group still disagrees with Talley but sees no point in continuing the effort.
Harold W. English manager of Bivins field and local pilot holds the Mono Aircraft agency. He received his second Monocoupe today and has a Ryan agency contract to bring Ryan planes here. He bought a Ryan Brougham and will fly it from San Diego to Amarillo next week. He also services Scenic Airways ships and provides lunches at their noon stop from Chicago to Phoenix.
Three Canadian Pacific railroad workers the engineer M Rogers fireman W Stanbury and conductor W Clay all from Revelstoke were killed when the locomotive boiler exploded from water shortage near Glacier B C Glacier lies 200 miles west of Calgary Rail headquarters announced the wreck occurred today.
Berlin reports Germany grants 100 percent approval of the U S anti war treaty in a note to the United States. President Hindenburg, Premier Mueller, cabinet and Reichstag foreign affairs committee endorse Kellogg proposal. US Ambassador Schirmann handed note for dispatch to Washington. State Department to publish the note tomorrow.
Amarillo officials announced the school tax rate will drop from 82 to 80 cents, the lowest in the district, despite $1,140,000 in school bonds voted last year. Valuations total about $63 million this year, with growth offset by regional shifts and new construction as enrollment rises. The two-third assessment on value remains the basis for the 80 cent rate. United Press dispatch from Mexico City reports fourteen rebels were killed and fourteen wounded defending Anhuijulle. In separate clashes two rebels died and several were wounded. A Guadalajara report to Excelsior noted residents successfully repelled the assaults.
July 12 Chicago notes Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska was nominated by the Farmer-Labor party for president after a convention vote. Norris had told Chicago leaders he would not accept a third-party nomination, yet the party pursued him on the third ballot, with Vereene Moultrie of Georgia named as running mate and Norris receiving 14 of 30 votes.
In White Plains New York on July 12 Mrs Anastasia Smith moved to file for divorce after waiting thirty years for her husband who had been away on a horseback ride. Blackburn Boxwell ambulance noted in report.
Mrs. Eleanor Reingard, 26, confessed to police in De Kalb WL that she strangled her three months old daughter. A coroner jury had ruled accidental death after the mother testified the child died while nursing from a bottle. She gave no motive for the act.
Heavy rains last night and this morning across the Canadian Miami Mobeetie Pampa wheat belt damaged crops. Winds and hail accompanied the shower as high test wheat values were cut down by being blown over. The rain will delay harvest for a few days but is beneficial for row crops.
New York July 12 Determination of notification dates for its two standard bearers signals the start of the presidential campaign. Democratic national committee chose John J. Raskob of Delaware as new chairman after a forty five minute meeting with no dissent.
Seven prisoners at Eddyville faced their final 24 hours after Governor Sampson refused clemency. All are condemned for murder with executions slated between midnight and 1 a.m. The group includes four white men and three Black inmates, with two white defendants named Mitra and Seymour.
Two of the Italia walking party, Captains Alberto Mariano and Filippo Zappi, were saved by the Russian icebreaker Krassin after six weeks of exposure. Dr. Finn Malmgren was found dead. the third Italian, Lieutenant Viglieri’s group near Foyn Island remains marooned as Krassin resumes ice shifting. The rescuers reported Mariano severely frostbitten yet alive while Zappi recovered.
Texas Highway division plans a giant nail picking machine to sweep nine feet of roadway in one pass. W A French says construction at the highway workshops aims for operation within a month barring material delays. O Zappe of Southwestern Public Service drew plans after studying existing machines to remove nails bolts and metal objects from highways.
