Alexander Legge, head of the Federal Farm Board, urged farmers to slow wheat production to boost prices. Secretary of Agriculture Arthur M. Hyde and Federal Farm Board Chairman Alexander Legge arrived in Amarillo at 3 a m aboard a bus from Liberal Kansas after a detour to Dalhart due to a faulty compass. They registered at the Herring Hotel and would not be disturbed until 10:30 a m. A College Station delegation including Paul C. Manglesdorf O B Martin C A Bonnen John Edmond and Sterling Evans also gathered in the lobby awaiting their appearance.
In Amarillo at the Hotel Herring, U S Secretary of Agriculture Arthur M. Hyde says there is nothing for consumers to fear as the Federal Farm Board plans to curtail wheat acreage. He describes production as out of balance, noting the sector is not more than 20 percent out of balance.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was buried today in the garden of his Crowborough home in Sussex England. A Union Jack flew at half staff above the nearby golf club as the body was laid to rest in a simple ceremony conducted by Rev Dr Brayton Thomas. Dennis Conan Doyle was ill and could not attend. Lady Doyle and two daughters were present with Adrian Doyle as other family members.
Hayfork California stood in the path of forest fires burning along a ten mile front. Eight fires, started by lightning, were reported in the Bitter Root Valley area with 410 Harrison listed as a site of gasoline caused alarm. No damage was reported, according to Assistant Chief Chester Moore.
Senator Pink Parrish urged strong support for Clint Small at a courthouse lawn rally in Amarillo. He warned Small’s run-off presence would seal a governorship, claiming Small would win broadly if Panhandle Plains voters back him and Northeast Texas shifts toward his candidacy.
Scores of residents visited Greenlawn Cemetery at midnight to witness a white dangling shapeless apparition circling trees and tombs. Margie Arnold four died when a car carrying Anita Nobles and Misa Estelle Nobles was struck and overturned by a truck three miles east of Panhandle. Mrs Arnold injured but recovering. Witnesses say the truck driver fled the scene. Body held at Stone Funeral Home Pampa. Boxwell Bros ambulance and wheat talks at Amarillo event referenced.
Max M. and Louis Levand, publishers of the Wichita Daily Beacon, demand Alexander Legge resign as Farm Board chairman. They cite Legge’s Dodge City speech remark about Kansas in the trough and urge apology to Kansans and action to aid farmers. They sent telegrams to Legge and to President Hoover requesting resignation.
Omaha report: John Ringwalt, 7 percent retiree and Arthur Ringwalt’s father, died by his own hand after telling his wife he could not endure another day of heat. Found in his basement with a bullet wound and revolver, his son Jack had just returned from the Missouri Valley Tennis tournament with a new bride. The heat wave had raised the regional death toll to 34, hitting hardest in the St. Louis area as Chicago reports from July 11.
A Kansas City group including Murnt Boyle president of the Missouri State Bar Association and attorney Raymond Watson perished when their plane disintegrated over salt flats near Port Aransas Texas. Survivor S. M. Dierks watched the craft fail as the wing ripped away and the pilot Gene Gabbert was among the deceased.
