German doctors and hospital staff were arrested at a Kaufbeuren station where children and adults suffered under starvation and drug experiments. A nurse confessed to killing 211 children for bonuses. The site housed 1,578 people on June 30 with a branch at Irsee holding 468 others in varying malnutrition.
The White House said newspaper reporters may not cover real sessions of the Big Three conference in the Berlin area. Press Secretary Ross said only official communiques would convey news, with no date given for the meeting between Truman Churchill and Stalin.
President Truman enacted a three year extension of the reciprocal trade program authorizing broad executive power to cut tariffs. Washington July 5 The Civil Aeronautics Board today authorized Pan American Airways American Export Airlines and Transcontinental and Western Air to operate transatlantic routes to Europe.
Tens of thousands of federal workers face pay delays as a $752 million 1946 appropriation bill stalls for 11 major war-front agencies. The House acts this afternoon with Senate prospects of no funds, while agencies may operate only by incurring obligations under emergency provisions. Payrolls due tomorrow affect the Office of Defense Transportation, Economic Stabilization, and Scientific Research and Development.
Seven acre West Amarillo Park bounded by Line North Sunset and Western is under grading. In Aldershot England hundreds of Canadian service men awaited transport home staged a two and a half hour demonstration. Upwards of 40 men smashed store windows and damaged the shopping district with debris. Damages ran to several thousand pounds. Maj. Gen. Dan Spry reprimanded the troops citing three main complaints delays in shipping food and pay. No injuries or drunkenness were reported.
The Weather Bureau reports partly cloudy conditions this afternoon and tonight with widely scattered thunderstorms possible. Friday brings more cloudiness and scattered thundershowers. temperatures remain steady with cooler nights. In Panhandle and South Plains areas, thundershowers expected Friday. New Mexico sees similar trends, with mountain showers mainly. Highs 70s to 90s, cooler tonight, 94/65/89 observed.
Eight hundred European theater veterans faced furloughs after overcrowded trains described as vermin infested and dirty. Officers reported cramped Day Coaches and clogged plumbing while reports of German POWs aboard Pullmans circulated. Gen Abbott said 2009 men were interviewed with no POW sightings.
