July 4 Grand Forks reports ten known dead and about 30 injured after a tornado rips a wide 80 mile course from southern Manitoba into North Dakota and Minnesota. Widespread destruction includes farms, livestock losses, and multiple towns hit.
A fast spreading blaze swept Lake Manor and nearby Chatsworth leaving one third of homes burned. Crews fought the flames overnight and kept watch around the clock while residents fled with few possessions. One injury reported and several traffic crashes amid fleeing crowds and smoke.
SOUTH KINGSTOWN RI July 4 UP Gale Sullivan of Chicago executive director of the Democratic National Committee was arrested after his car collided with another on the shore road two miles west of Wakefield No injuries were reported and charges may be filed this afternoon Sullivan and James Earl King of Foster Center were shaken but uninjured The special arraignment in district court before Judge Stephen J Casey was planned Sullivan headed for Providence when the accident occurred

Vicksburg Mississippi July 4 General of the Army Dwight D Eisenhower said at a news conference he would not pretend to rule out the presidency but added no one has asked him and he has no political ambitions. He spoke as the honored guest at Vicksburgs Carnival of the Confederacy and noted the city only recently began celebrating the Fourth of July again after Grant captured it in 1863 after a 47 day siege.
The new presidential airplane named Independence is en route from Washington to Santa Monica after a stop at Fort Worth Army Air Base. Lt. Col. Henry T. Myers of Fort Worth piloted the craft, which will stay for factory checks. The crew reported a 310 mph average on the Washington to Fort Worth leg, 4 hours 20 minutes in total.
A fireworks stand in Wellston suburb exploded after a lighted firecracker was tossed by a boy, injuring six and panicking crowds. One seriously injured person remained hospitalized as others recovered. The blast damaged nearby cars and windows, while fireworks sales briefly paused before resuming at nearby stands. Local officials noted the stand was near the St Louis city limit and the city forbids fireworks sales.
In a Fourth of July address from Monticello, President Truman denounces extreme nationalism and Soviet objections to the Marshall plan. He warns that obstruction to cooperative economic planning hinders peaceful European reconstruction and cites Russia’s stance at Paris talks.
