Five Killed In Gas Blast Near Peru Illinois
Five men were killed and at least six injured when a natural gas explosion occurred two miles north of Peru Illinois. The workers from Illinois Power Co. were laying a new gas main and preparing to tap an old line to redirect gas flow when the blast happened. Gas service was cut off in La Salle and Peru as crews worked to restore the idle La Salle plant. The pipe explosion hurled cast iron fragments like shrapnel, causing the casualties.
