Washington Deserted on Fourth of July Amid Heat
Washington resembled a deserted town as Fourth of July festivities and heat kept government offices quiet. Secretaries Ickes and Perkins were visible to a few sightseers while most officials fled to cooler spots. With Roosevelt en route to Hawaii, Congress away, and cabinet absent, New Deal activity paused for weeks. In Cleveland an NRA probe was promised after a northern Ohio woman lamented 10 cemetery lots for a $10 weekly income. Termite damage in 1933 is estimated at $50 million across the United States.
