Leland Stowe reports from a Russian camp housing nearly 600 new German prisoners. He portrays young Nazis as tough minded, indoctrinated, and unashamed of Nazi brutality, arguing morale and resolve under Hitler will drive their war effort this year. The piece includes digressions on wartime skepticism, race, religion, and social anecdotes.
New York July 3 Ben Anglastro an air raid warden returned home to fetch forgotten cigarettes before duty and saved his wife and year old daughter from gas from a kitchen range. Police call it an accident. Anglastro called it fortunate that he forgot his cigarettes. Also notes Venezuela bans new car sales above 1941 prices and Colombia shows limited US films.
George H Minchin is named general manager of the Santa Fe Western Lines with Clarence R Tucker as assistant general manager for the Southern district. Both have been acting in these roles from Amarillo since October and December. Minchin succeeded Col John A Gillies who went into active army service and was later reported missing.
Walter M. Mumma has paid 415.50 toward marriage license fees for soldiers this year. The Dauphin County registrar of wills gave 250 for each of 160 soldiers in the first six months of 1942, noting no expectation of more setup costs. Mumma says he feels someone should help the soldiers and adds he is not kicking. The extra 15.50 covers consent papers when parental approval was required.
President Roosevelt attacked pressure group tactics in Congress over the agriculture appropriation bill and framed the issue as government use of feed resources to fuel wartime food production. The report notes his long Santa Fe service and regional rail leadership, including Tucker’s rise to acting assistant general manager of the Western Lines.
Marietta Oklahoma reports a $100000 blaze that leveled seven of ten north side structures on Main Street. Werner Faas, 32, was gravely injured when debris trapped him during the explosion that blew front sections of a grocery and hardware store. Kalton Hicks and Carson Colley escaped the rear door unharmed. Firemen from Marietta with aid from Ardmore and Gainesville contained flames shortly before midnight.
James P. Hackler, newly named freight traffic manager of the Santa Fe System with Chicago headquarters, will be honored at a Monday buffet by officials and co workers. Former assistant general freight agent of the Panhandle Santa Fe Railway, he is credited as a leading railway rate officer.
Amarillo observes the Grand and Glorious Fourth with picnics patriotic speaking flag ceremonies a band concert dances and more. The Ellwood Park picnic opens at 3 pm with activities led by local recreation leaders followed by a city band concert and speeches by prominent Amarilloans.
London July 3. The British cruiser Hermione was reported lost in recent Mediterranean convoy operations. Also lost were destroyers Bedouin Hasty Grove and Airdale and the Polish destroyer Arp Kujawiak.
A six week Red Cross life saving course begins Monday July 6 at Gem Lake under Don Chamberlain as instructor and Mrs Lucy Bennett Moore as chair. The program is open to the public with no preregistration required.
The Panhandle and Santa Fe commends Hackler for his promotion to freight traffic manager and anticipates his utmost success in the role. He is noted for diligence and modesty and credits his current rise to training under T. B. Gallaher, former general freight and passenger agent of the system.
Local recruiting offices will operate with normal weekend hours despite Independence Day. Marines and Army offices close at 1 pm Saturday. naval office open all day Saturday and 9 am to 1 pm Sunday. Coast Guard offices have not received official orders. Recruits shipped from Amarillo today declined. three men sent to Dallas for Navy enlistment: Arthur Cecil Richerson Jr, Borger. Wallace Fieldon Magee, Amarillo. W B Gilbert, Flomot.
Government lakes will host boating and water sports while rodeos and all day celebrations are set for Clarendon and Cimarron New Mexico. The double holiday reaches a climax Sunday with Independence Day sermons in Amarillo churches announced by Dr. E G Hamlett president of the Amarillo Ministerial Alliance.
