Amarillo residents report lighter showers and southwest winds shaping a sultry Fourth. Rain last night ranged from 0.14 to 0.15 inches. Local woes include hail damage to Muncy orchard, swollen doors and windows, and a finger injury from a shutting window.
German high command reports Britain’s overseas supply ships suffered 768,950 tons of losses in June. Submarines destroyed 417,450 tons. mines and further damage left ships unusable or completely lost for long periods.
Postmaster W. D. DeGrassi announced there will be no window service or city mail delivery tomorrow as staff take the day off for the Fourth.
Italian high command said British planes struck the air base on the Isle of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. German aircraft clashed with forces at Tobruk and Matruh in Libya and Egypt.

Kansas City market notes show live stock totals at 2 000 hogs up to 10.65 top, cattle salable 1 000 with mixed changes and beef steers around 10.85. Sheep supply 2 000 with spring lambs active and steady trade. Financial security fund lists liquidating price 1.45 and offering 1.60.
City health department urges fewer paper cup uses citing convenience and cleanliness under limited washing facilities. It notes litter around drive ins and drug stores and recommends placing convenient receptacles to eliminate the nuisance.
A Reuters dispatch from London reports Germany has withdrawn about half of its troops from occupied France. The note adds that Canada contributes 50,000 men in the Royal Air Force.
Deputy Sheriff Ray Russell of Monkton was killed when strikers halted a milk truck bound for New York and dumped the load. More than 6,000 gallons of milk were dumped in three towns. A fresh milk shortage looms as government purchases for Britain divert milk to cheese and dried products, easing supply for cheese plants and condensaries.
President Roosevelt signed a 1 041 444 529 deficiency appropriation bill but refused to extend civil service coverage to the Farm Security Administration. He urged Congress to repeal the rider allowing civil service for FSA employees after exams at the earliest opportunity. He stressed merit over caprice or favoritism in government staffing amid heavy federal workloads.

The Sherman anti trust probe charges three major packing houses Wilson Armour and Swift, the American Meat Institute, and the hog section of Chicago committee with alleged violations. Indicted individuals include Thomas E. Wilson George A Eastwood W S Clithero F M Sherwood John Holmes S W Lund and FP Knutsen.
