Vault Saves Bank's Cash From Blaze
In Childress on January 31 over sixty five thousand dollars in cash was recovered intact from the vault of the First State Bank after a fire that destroyed the bank and six nearby businesses. Safe cracker Percy Nichols of Chickasha opened the vault using the standard combination as smoke issued and cashier Roy Key declared the money safe. Debris and heat delayed entry but money and records showed only moisture damage from sweating vault walls. Safety depository remains to be opened as crews continue clearing rubble.
