The White House announced President Truman will visit Baylor University in March to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Waco. Baylor had planned the ceremony despite a Texas Baptist Convention critique in 1945 over Truman’s alleged attitudes toward gambling and drinking.
Sparkie, a frisky bulldog beloved by hundreds of St. Mary's Academy students, was killed when struck by a speeding truck in front of the school yesterday afternoon. Witnessed by Donald Ellis and his brothers, the pet died instantly and a small funeral is planned by Donald and the Ellis family.
Two 11 year old boys from Walton Indiana told Sheriff Howard Smith that their curiosity led them to place wire fencing on the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, derailing a speeding passenger train. Four people were killed in the wreck. The youths, Lyle Graves and Jack Sprinkle, were kept overnight at an orphanage as investigators probed the case. The lipstick theft linked to the boys’ actions remains under inquiry.
A wall encounter led to questioning of two youths who initially denied any link to a rail derailment and then confessed they acted out of curiosity to see what happened. No charges were filed as sheriff notes no prior juvenile records and federal authorities will decide action.
Senior officers of the Texas A and M cadet corps withdrew resignations after an all night session but demanded the resignation of college president Gibb Gilchrist. Cadet officers want more voice in orders and reforms to restore cadet authority and traditions at the 70 year old institution.
