Tonight fair and colder with 48 to 32 degree extremes and scattered readings. West Texas and East Texas forecast cooler nights, with rain possible in the east and snow in the north Arkansas area, while Oklahoma and nearby regions turn colder with partly cloudy skies.
Los Angeles court session renews battle over Hickman murder trial as defense attorney Jerome Walsh declares the state has the wealth to hire alienists while the defendant is penniless. Walsh, testifying, calls the proceedings an unequal fight and seeks to delay or broaden mental examination.
Karl Douglas Haig, British commander in France and Belgium during World War I, died in London at age 66 from heart disease. He helped found Poppy Day and supported disabled veterans, remaining active in public life despite illness. He collapsed at his brother-in-law's home and died shortly after, after recent walk in Hyde Park and plans for travel.
Houston votes 200000 to construct an auditor ium for 25000 delegates expected at the June Democratic national convention. New York architect Kenneth Franzheim outlined plans for a sloped floor, elevated boxes, and enhanced acoustics. The hall will be temporary, razed after the event to prepare civic center improvements.
Roscoe Francis an 18 year old from the Plymouth area southwest of Shamrock was struck by a truck while traveling to Shamrock with his parents. He died at Beech sanitarium Saturday night with burial planned at Plymouth Cemetery Monday.
L. B. Wassick faces a forgery indictment and began trial in district court with a verdict expected this afternoon. Next, Dennis Gladys, a Black man, will be tried on a liquor charge following the Wassick proceedings.
Six month old Vivian Cardiel died in a house fire that heavily damaged the Cardiel home. Mrs. Cardiel, away at a grocery store, returned to flames engulfing the room where her infant lay. Emergency services and local businesses are noted in the report.
E. R. Murr motorcycle officer was injured Sunday during a death call. At 1514 Johnston Street J. L. Cavener witnessed asphyxiation at his home from a small gas heater. Murr regained consciousness at St. Anthony's Hospital but remains in critical condition. Cavener’s relatives awaited word as investigators continued.
Hundreds of motorists tried the new thirty five mile oil field highway from Amarillo to the four corners on opening day. The road proved smooth and scenic, aiding oil field traffic and material hauling between Amarillo and northern towns. Officials plan extensions and cutoffs to connect with more communities, potentially doubling its length.
Sheriff Sam C. Long of Love county, wounded during a bank robbery at Marietta last week, died today in a hospital in Ardmore Oklahoma.
Amarillo police report two cars stolen last night. A Special Nash Six coach owned by Rev. R. Thomson of 1106 Harrison street was taken with license 773-924 and motor 88159. A 1925 model coupe belonging to E. F. Dickerson of 610 Louisiana avenue was also reported stolen, license 790-117.
Senator Neely of West Virginia assailed Secretary Hoover in the senate calling him forgetful and amnesic. Neely also attacked Mellon and Borah, insisting Hoover cannot recall marriages parties or his country of residence in the last 14 years.
Temple Texas January report says K S Hull division superintendent of Santa Fe railway was shot and killed at a downtown corner. Bill Henderson former conductor, about sixty, allegedly shot himself moments after Hull fell. Henderson not expected to live. He had been relieved from Santa Fe service years earlier after a robbery charge tied to a Coleマン Roddy store holdup. Henderson was acquitted.
Col Harvey Haines, VP GM of the Board of City Development, returns from Houston trip praising cross party support for the convention. He notes buildings torn down on site and says preparations will be ready in time. T P Lee of Houston, Republican official, sent a blank check to the financing committee. Haines also mentioned Amarillo’s bid for two key state conventions.
A $150 000 fund will finance a large window at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York to depict 26 sporting events including horse racing and prize fighting. Bishop Manning accepted the gift saying it witnesses against Puritan blue laws and Sabbath restrictions. The donation comes from every known branch of sport and many athletes.
Dr Phil Wolfram outlined Kiwanis International work for under privileged children to the local club at noon. He urged organized effort to solve the problem. Tom Bruner reported on a committee urging Potter County citizens to pay poll tax and the club’s aid for Amarillo boys to attend the Hi Y conference at Wichita Falls. New members Fred Poole and Arthur Heflin were introduced.
President Coolidge asked Congress for a supplementary appropriation of 400000 to combat the pink cotton boll worm in Texas. The request was reported from Washington with reference to the administration’s pest control plan.
East coast endures the coldest wave of the season with temperatures from 30 below to 10 above. Four deaths attributed to the cold as ships seek the coast guard cutter No 107 and the freighter Aries reports danger. French liner Rochambeau and US liner George Washington describe the six day storm. Coast guard crews search for the cutter while more than twenty vessels aid. In New York area, two men die in winter accidents and others perish in car crashes amid snow and drift.
President Coolidge will address the semi annual government departments meeting in Washington. The speech will be broadcast nationwide via a network of radio stations just before 7 pm. Also to speak will be Director Lord of the budget with Marine Band music in the Memorial Continental Hall foyer.
Washington reports submarine S-3 separated from the control force about 100 miles off Cape Hatteras during a rain squall. Rear Admiral Brumby says search continues by Saratoga, Camden, and submarines S-7 through S-13. No contact since 2:25 a m. commanded by Lieut Warren from Springfield Illinois.
