Vernon Texas January 27 defense lawyers seek a delay or continuance in the trial of Emmett Thompson charged with murder in the death of Homer Crabtree last November. Prosecution opposes, claiming a key woman witness knows nothing and has signed a statement. More than a score of witnesses have arrived from Gray County with many more expected as arguments on the continuance motion proceed.
The massacre follows a mob attack on a Hindu procession in Raotpur district Bengal as Moslems clash with Hindus during Gandhi’s release. One Mogien killed and about fifty injured. police fired on rioters. three hundred Moslems jailed. Gandhi, greeted by cheering crowds in Poona and Bombay, calls for release of 60,000 political prisoners.

Four paving projects in Amarillo are ready for formal acceptance by the city commission. Letters of verification were presented by city engineer E N Stanley. Gober and Thompson worked on three projects including Kansas Street and Dixie Street, while John McKnight completed the South Ong Street section between Thirteenth and Fourteenth Avenues.

Adjutant General Bill Sterling says Texas Ranger captains will rise from the ranks rather than appointment of outsiders. The force, likely to be named tomorrow, may see delay due to Gov. Ross Sterling's North Texas trip. He envisions a 50 man Ranger strength and notes promotions depend on merit and practicality.
Los Angeles dated report about Paul Jorden Smith who claimed to be Pavel Jordanovitch, painting four ultra impressionistic works to mock critics. He admitted the deception arose after his wife’s painting, Exaltation renamed Yes We Have No Bananas, drew praise. Smith fears further exposes may immortalize the fictitious artist.
Radio Day by Day reports Boston’s first commercial television kit is offered through a local chain store group. The device includes a receiver and a radiovisor to reproduce electrical impulses as pictures. Vernon Bartlett, London representative of the League of Nations Secretariat, will speak in a London re broadcast next Sunday on WABC ar stations about The League and Its Work.
In Okla on January 27 a bridge hand reached seven spades, doubled and redoubled, with Paul Carey and partner Mrs. Carey taking on Mr. and Mrs. Allen Walker. The declarer scored 2690 points, including 150 honors and 840 for game, with 1500 for grand slam.
Dorothy Dennis a 21-year-old state witness described July 26 events at the Stanley Amarillo home near Lake Worth road. She testified she saw Roy Hawthorne arrive in a roadster, enter the house, heard dishes clash, and later saw the front room shades drawn as the radio was turned on.
Mrs J Hugh Walker of Lubbock is jailed in Brownfield charged with assault with intent to murder after a shooting at a hotel in Terry county wounded Beatrice Carr 19. Beatrice was taken to a sanitarium. Hugh Walker, her husband, is held for investigation. Evidence shows he used a hotel register under an assumed name with Hobbs New Mexico as address.
Orders are now being taken at the high school for senior rings and pins to be obtained this year through Finklea Jewelry Company. The rings are heavy yellow gold with a sardonyx set crest and the letter A. Pins will have the same workmanship and the guard will feature the figure 81.

Major Gen. Smedley D. Butler to explain remarks alleged to have insulted Premier Mussolini in a Philadelphia speech. Ambassador De Martino called the statements untrue and slanderous and said Mussolini never accompanied by Americans on Italian motor trips or ran over people. Austin January 27 The house judiciary committee debates changes to the exemption law proposed by T R Bond Terrell. The bill removes wage garnishment on salary above 200 monthly and tightens burial ground exemptions to those for immediate family. Exemptions include homestead household goods tools up to 1000, livestock and animals, one wagon and buggy one motor truck and essential food seed and feed.
Clara Bow film No Limit opened at Mission Theater for a week but was pulled after three days. Paramount Publix officials in Dallas ordered replacement with The Bat Whiskers after a Los Angeles trial involving Clara Bow’s former secretary Daisy DeBoe. Some Amarillo patrons rushed in while others canceled showing due to Bow’s presence.
A special grand jury indictment in Detroit lists six men and one woman charged with the slaying of radio commentator Gerald E. Buckley. Named defendants include Angelo Livecchi Ted Pizzino Joe Bomarito and Pete Licavoli. The document names 82 witnesses.
