Smithwick Trial Opens With Guarded Courtroom After Attempt on Prosecutor Life

On July 29 in Belton a heavily guarded courtroom heard Smithwick recount the gun attack on Prosecutor James K. Evetts as Mason sat in a car on Alice street. Smithwick testified Mason grabbed for his gun and he fired, while a manhunt for the unseen shooter continued.

Moore Pleads Guilty in Grocery Hold-up

Crosbyton and Lubbock resident L R Moore pleaded guilty in 47th District Court to armed robbery in the June 22 Piggly Wiggly hold-up at 1500 Polk. He testified the Rader twins, Leo Earl and Edward Lee, helped, but declined to name which twin entered the store.

Snow Flurries and Cold to Hit Amarillo Tonight

Forecaster Winburn warns of a deep Colorado storm bringing a cold snap to the Panhandle with occasional snow flurries tonight and Wednesday. After a mild 75 degree day, temperatures will plummet and stay near normal over five days, with warmer Friday then colder again Saturday. Previous precipitation records are cited: Measurable snow December 20 21 was .02 inch. last rain September 2 3 was .90 inch.

Kansas City Firm Wins Amarillo School Bond Bid

Stern and Co of Kansas City won a 31 000 dollar issue of 5 percent bonds from the Amarillo school board at an informal meeting. The bid yielded a 5073 90 premium, highest of 11 bids, with premiums down to 4180. Bonds mature in one to six years to retire a 100 000 bond issue due Feb 1. A bond election may be held April 1 to fund an expansion of the school system.

Life-Term Prisoner Used As Police Bait Vanishes

Tulsa police admitting a life-term inmate was used to trap a murder suspect failed to recover both the suspect and the bait. William Auburn Hunt, freed through the governor to gather information on patrolman Jim Peters’s 1928 burglary killing, disappeared after five days of surveillance. Banquet Tickets Near Sellout in Amarillo Chamber Event

Governor backs cigarette tax hike to fund hospital aid

Governor Shivers signaled support if Legislature enacts a cigarette tax to finance a long-range hospital building program. The Texas hospital board urged a special 40 to 60 million dollar tax, to create a building fund of at least five million annually, while a temporary tax would cover 1951 operating needs. The present cigarette tax is two cents and last year raised about 23.5 million dollars. a one-cent increase would add roughly 7.5 million annually.
