Prime Minister Winston Churchill stated in the House of Commons that the Ardennes battle could shorten the war rather than prolong it. He urged Germany and Japan to seek unconditional surrender and warned that negotiations would not be entered while victory remained delayed.
Soviet and German reports describe rapid Soviet pressure across Poland from Lublin to Warsaw. Berlin acknowledged gains near Lodz and Czestochowa while Moscow touted a major offensive aimed at Berlin, with Soviet writers predicting an early end to the war and German losses mounting, including hundreds of tanks in five days.
World War II dispatches describe Superfortress raids over Korea Japan and the China coast including Hong Kong Canton and Formosa. Tokyo boastfully cites 250000 tons of ships destroyed as U S forces push ashore on Luzon and advance toward Manila. allied leaders meet in Burma as Mountbatten Weede Meyer Sultan and Stratemeyer discuss Ledo Burma supply routes.
American Third Army and First Army forces attack the Sure River sector around Diekirch in Luxembourg as Patton’s units press toward St Vith. British forces push into Germany near Susteren and Echt while German resistance tightens along the Roer pocket.
In Houffalize Belgium crowds hide in a foul black hole under a ruined church seeking a doctor and medicine. About 75 people mostly old women and children are wounded and waiting amid rubble after the second German occupation and bombardment.
Amarillo and vicinity show clearing tonight and Friday with warmer afternoon temperatures. West Texas and New Mexico expect considerable cloudiness and partly cloudy conditions with light snow flurries in the northwest Friday. Temperatures near 40 highs, around 30 early morning, 34 midday.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson reports U S ground forces suffered 332912 casualties on the Western Front from D day June 6 to Jan 1. The tally includes 54562 killed 232672 wounded and 45678 missing as Allies press the Ardennes bulge and destroy enemy columns with artillery and air power.
The United Days of Texas passed a resolution regretting Dallas retail liquor dealers' $30,000 gift to Southern Methodist University’s expansion. Dr. Walter H. McKenzie noted unanimous approval. The group also cited $25,000 to the Baylor in Dallas drive and $10,000 to St Paul Hospital from liquor vendors. Julius Schepps said the gift came from a three day package store drive.
Two popular citrus juices grapefruit juice and blended grapefruit and orange juice were placed back under rationing as the War Food Administration froze can makers' output to meet armed forces needs. Ration values are 10 points for No 2 cans 20 points for 46 ounce cans and 40 points for No 10 cans. Orange juice remains ration free.
U S submarines sunk 24 additional Japanese ships, including four combat vessels, in a Navy tally. The four warships comprised a destroyer and three escort ships, with transports, tankers, and cargo vessels also lost. Total Japanese ships sunk by American submarines reaches 958, including 103 combatants.
A small force of Flying Fortresses bombed Kaiserlautern behind the Saar front while 100 Mustang fighters and 100 B 17s attacked a rail center west of Mannheim. RAF bombers hit Magdeburg and returned with no losses as the all out raid continued on German fuel resources and industry. Later German radio noted heavy bombers approaching from the west.
The Associated Press reports additional Texas conventions were canceled. The Baptist General Convention of Texas executive committee recommended nullifying all meetings this year including the Texas convention in Waco in November and the evangelistic spring conference in Fort Worth. Abilene Christian College also called off its 27th annual Bible lectureship set for February 18 to 22.
The Justice Department filed a Newark New Jersey civil complaint charging General Electric and its international subsidiary with conspiring with firms in Germany France Britain Japan Belgium and Italy to exchange patents and divide world markets for electrical equipment to reduce competition. The suit covers most electrical equipment excluding lamps and radios. Assistant Attorney General Wendell Berge said a separate suit exists over electric lamps and the radio appliance angle is under investigation.
