City hikes pay for 440 Amarillo workers by 5 to 20

City Manager N V Moss announces pay raises totaling 520 per month for 440 Amarillo workers in all class employees. Base pay for police and fire staff rises. patrolmen, sergeants, lieutenants, and lieutenants in fire also see increased monthly wages, varying with service length. Allied tanks push into Suwon then withdraw in Korean front

Allied combat team led by tanks entered Suwon, 17 air miles south of Seoul, and withdrew after dark. It marked the fourth and largest reconnaissance in force on the western Korean front. About 100 Reds routed. central front saw withdrawal from the Wonju wedge as US Eighth Army shifted to a defensive line after Seoul retreat. Work Under Way On Elizabeth Bivins Home Project

Excavation for the Elizabeth Jane Bivins Home in east Amarillo is complete with the site levelled. The contract price is 344,988 dollars, with Walter E. Wirtz of Amarillo as contractor. The 35 acre grounds will house 50 to 70 residents and staff in a Georgian style building designed by Amarillo architect Macon O. Carder. First furnishings decisions include draperies by White & Kirk.

Dismissal Surprise for Amarillo Corportation Court Judge Lofthus

Judge Harris E. Lofthus says he is shocked by his dismissal from Amarillo’s corporation court by City Manager N. V. Moss. C. Lloyd King, former district attorney, will replace him February 1. Lofthus began the post last year under the new council plan separating the court from the police department. He learned of the decision about 5 p.m. yesterday and may vacate earlier if he chooses.
