Gen Joseph T McNarney ordered a ban on all GI mass meetings protests and demonstrations against demobilization policies in Europe After protests climaxed with a noisy rally before his Frankfurt headquarters soldiers jeered him and clashed with MPs A policing action followed amid a broader push to manage demobilization delays as Eisenhower pledged 3 000 000 soldiers would be discharged by July 1 and urged calm disciplined conduct.
Winston Churchill in Miami Beach on January 16 1944 said he hopes U S troops are not all sent home noting Britain cannot handle postwar Europe alone. He urged keeping armies in the field to preserve victory work and affirmed support for the partition of Germany by military occupation.
