A weather update notes a dip then rise in temperature. Census checks are mailed to residents including Mrs. G D Henderson and nine others with varied sums. Amarillo population stated at 14 51,686 with next census expected to exceed 65,000. Twenty eight young men from Potter County left for induction after a brief draft board ceremony. They entrained at Santa Fe station for Lubbock as part of Board No 1. Gordon Conner led the group with Clarence Stephenson as assistant. A total of 74 county men are set for induction with another call anticipated in February.
William James McGowan night roundhouse foreman for the Santa Fe Railroad died at 4 45 AM at his home 3407 Harrison Street after a short illness. He was 57 and had lived in Amarillo 23 years since coming from Clovis New Mexico. He joined the Santa Fe in 1911 and served as night foreman 19 years. Survivors include his wife four sons two daughters a sister and a brother and eight grandchildren. The body is at Boxwell Brothers Chapel with funeral plans pending.
Members of the Optimist Club heard Dr. Conrad Freed, West Texas State College, Canyon, explain a theory encouraging self expression in children. He said freedom of expression is as vital in schools as in democracy and that the three Rs can be taught while fostering personality. Three new members were approved to join next Thursday.
Amarillo Retail Druggists Association repeats last night’s meeting program at the Amarillo Hotel tonight at 8. Dr W J Danforth will be guest speaker repeating his address. State association reports will also be repeated to extend the program to all druggists.

Grady Hazlewood of Amarillo was chosen chairman of the federal relations committee. The appointment came as part of a lineup including Sen. Moore of Houston as chairman of state affairs and Sen. Aiken of Paris heading the finance committee. The report notes Denmark’s flour mill in Odense dating back to 1100 and The Royal Brewery established in 1443 among other old firms.

After a two hour city hall conference San Jacinto civic leaders sought pledges from property owners to set back buildings along West Sixth Avenue from Georgia to Belleview Streets. The city would fund paving curb and gutter if the street widens to 50 feet with an estimated cost of 5.36 dollars per front foot. Property owners could face about 5 dollars per front foot for setbacks and a 15 foot sidewalk. Leaders Floyd Hissong Kiwanis Club president and Neil Shaw public affairs chair led the delegation.
