Mrs Wrathal placed twins in a tub to escape a fire in a Salt Lake City suburb. Flames blocked escape, she went for water, then leaped from a shed window barefoot in the snow. She returned with a hammer to break through a wall but fainted. Fire crews rescued the girls. revival efforts failed.

Kerrville businessman H J Antoine, 56, announced plans to run for Texas lieutenant governor. He supports nominating presidential electors by congressional district and said winning is secondary to teaching voters how to break the current ballot box constraints.

Railroad Okays West Eighth Avenue Overpass Plan

The Rock Island Railroad and city officials agree on cost sharing for the West Eighth Avenue overpass as part of a 1.25 million dollar street improvement program. A telegram from J. D. Farrington confirms the railroad’s approval and a formal agreement is to be drafted. The overpass will link West Eighth Avenue to Georgia Street, creating a new west-side traffic artery.

Divers Get No Answer From 52 Trapped Men

In Chatham England January 13 194? the Royal Navy said all hope was lost for the 52 divers trapped in the sunken submarine Truculent after nine bodies were recovered, raising the death toll to 61 from the Thames Estuary disaster. Next of kin were being notified and no survivors were expected.

Midwest Flood Danger Mounts

The rain belt paralyzed the Ohio and middle Mississippi valleys with rain drifting into Oklahoma and Kansas. Forecaster A W Walstrom warned that additional rainfall could worsen the flood outlook as rescue crews from the Army Red Cross and volunteers bolster weakened levees. Over 4 000 people fled Illinois Indiana Kentucky and Missouri as flood waters from the Ohio Wabash Cumberland and Green rivers forced families from homes. The Ohio flooded Rossclare Illinois main street with 60 families seeking safety, while Kentucky rivers also drove evacuations. Walter Irvin Inc promotes 1950 Ford trucks at 205 Taylor.

Truculent sinking aftermath claims more divers find dead

Divers and frogmen tapped morse messages from the sunken Truculent as crews recovered six more bodies and rescued fifteen men after the submarine was rammed by a Swedish tanker. Eleven survived from seventy six aboard. a Lancaster crew of five perished on takeoff at a Scotland RAF station en route to the site.

Mayor Gene Klein discussed with Dewitt C. Greer of the State Highway Department the timing for contracting the construction of a proposed underpass on East Tenth Avenue. A decision on scheduling this project was being sought.

New Pool Opens at Youth Center Tomorrow

The 30 by 90 foot indoor pool at 609 Carolina will open for public swimming from 10 a m to 10 p m tomorrow. The facility, begun in mid 1947 by San Jacinto Kiwanis led by George Kercher, features membership and daily rates. Les Kilgore leads operations with assistants for the inaugural day.

Attempt to Wreck Two Fast Trains in Chicago

North Western Railroad reports a deliberate attempt to wreck two fast passenger trains entering Chicago. The Twin Cities 400 from Minneapolis and the Valley 400 from Green Bay plowed into maintenance debris on the North Side but remained on tracks with no injuries. The Twin Cities carried 300 passengers and the Valley 400 had 170 aboard as air reservoirs were punctured and wheels were flattened amid the incident.

Saboteurs Placed Rail Barricades Delays In Twin Cities

Rail line crews found heavy metal bars placed on tracks near a padlocked maintenance shed. About 30 minutes after the first obstruction a second pile appeared, narrowly avoiding derailment. Police and railroad agents investigated as to whether hoodlums or saboteurs were behind the attempt.

Amarillo Area Weather Report Summary

Amarillo and vicinity expect fair and windy conditions with mild temperatures. Tonight to Saturday will be fair and slightly colder, with forecasts showing highs near 52 today and 44 tomorrow, and a 57 high with a 36 low in the 24 hour period ending this morning. West Texas also stays fair this afternoon through Saturday with colder Panhandle and South Plains conditions. Ford trucks for '50 on display tomorrow.

FBI Chief Apologizes To Doctor For Probe

Dr. R B Robins says J Edgar Hoover wrote to a Texas doctor apologizing for the FBI anti trust probe of Texas medical societies. Robins says the letter orders came from Herbert Bergson and notes Hoover’s dislike of political use of the FBI. The focus was suspected price fixing in Texas medicine and retaliation claim linked to anti socialized medicine bills.

Boss Dress Up as Uncle Tom Figure Cleared by NLRB

In Washington on January 13 the NLRB ruled a boss may imitate the villain from Uncle Tom's Cabin during plant activity. Walter L. Berry Jr., manager of Charroin Manufacturing in San Diego, used a whip and costume to urge workers to vote. The CIO Textile Workers union praised the act, while an election produced 78 to 184 against the union. The board deemed it a humorous incident not affecting the election’s outcome.

No Action On Civil Rights Bill Debate Set In Congress

The Labor Committee seeks to call up the civil rights bill using special parliamentary machinery on January 23 with unlimited amendments but only two hours of general debate. Texas Democrat Rep. John E. Lyle Jr. criticized six weeks of debate, joining Southern Democrats in opposing the measure which would ban private employment discrimination based on race color or religion as a keystone of Truman's civil rights program. Both parties pledge support in their platforms.
