In Farwell Texas on January 12 George J Hassell was found guilty of murdering his step son Al den Hassell and received the death penalty. He has two days to appeal. In Chicago Commissioner Landis exonerated all baseball players in the 1917 White Sox Detroit Tigers scandal citing no proof of a meeting to discuss funds or sloughing.
Maryland Governor Albert C. Ritchie urged the state to resist federal encroachment in his inaugural address to the Maryland General Assembly. He warned that the nation has drifted toward centralized control and pledged to defend the right to local liberty and state powers as part of Maryland's heritage.
The Panhandle faces a cold snap with a likely snow tonight and tomorrow. Forecasters expect a low near 25 degrees, with daytime highs around 40. The cold front from Montana is anticipated to drop temperatures from current readings of 37 at 7 am toward the low 40s.

Canton, Jan 12 Pat Mc Dermott was given life in the Ohio penitentiary for the murder of Don H K Mellett Canton editor last July. The court overruled a motion for a new trial Mc Dermott stated he did not have a fair trial as his only remark.
Ed Goss of Denton and Harris county, jailed on two life terms for murder, received a full pardon from Governor Mitcham A. Ferguson. He had been convicted for killing an elderly man while traveling and later for killing a man in Humble and stealing his car. The governor has not released the clemency proclamation yet.
Hamilton Ontario January 12 John Barty was hanged today for the murder of Mrs Nancy Cook a grocery clerk who resisted a till robbery last June He killed her with an iron bar The remainder notes an unrelated hotel and a Panhandle meeting place with brief quotes.
In Austin on January 12 the Dr. J. Frank Norris murder trial selected its sixth juror, C. A. Galbreath, a married Austin butcher with a nonchurch membership and a Methodist wife. He joins five others questioned as prosecutors use peremptory challenges, while defense teams probe death penalty views and lodge ties amid a shrinking gallery.
Edwin Wade, an Amarillo insurance employee, sues The Globe News Publishing in federal court for 100000 dollars claiming a News Globe article about his arrest in an alleged North Amarillo post office robbery attempt libeled him. Wade also sues former police officials for 10000 dollars each over alleged abuse during custody.
Two new smallpox cases were reported this morning bringing the total to about fifty. Most cases are in the Mexican quarter with ten Mexicans ill. Three deaths are linked to the outbreak, including Mrs. D L King and Mrs. Jack Hinerman, plus a schoolboy Francis Hardy. One mild case near the stockyards, M T Emmons, is hospitalized at the detention hospital. Several patients have been discharged and homes fumigated. For garbage service call 2034.
A Guadalajara dispatch reports federal troops recaptured Cocula Aranden and Totolan in Jalisco, killing 26 rebels. Earlier reports note 21 killed and 10 wounded in Cocula during clashes between Catholics and municipal authorities, with the mayor and a deputy killed. General Miguel Pina said the revolts are sporadic and not a single military problem, while rail sabotage remains limited and not indicative of a broader crisis.
Raymond Feeney alias M A McCarty held in Borger on car theft charges will be transferred to Amarillo for questioning in the death of 4 year old Gordon Stone run over Dec 20. Feeney's arrest followed a long detective search with rewards posted. authorities plan charges upon transfer and continue seeking the car driver.
United States veterans bureau and Hanson Post No 54 seek Albert H. Ferguson a world war veteran said to be in Amarillo but location unknown. If found he should contact Iraq. Checks for government compensation are withheld pending a valid mailing address.
Pedro J. Zepeda, agent for Dr. Sacasa's Liberal government in Nicaragua, claims arms for the Liberal fight against Diaz were shipped from New Orleans under U S state department licenses. He says rifles and machine guns were purchased from American firms, and cites evidence plus a letter from Puerto Cabezas officials noting local aid from Bragman Lumber and Cayamel Fruit companies in Liberal zones.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed 28 appeals and withdrew seven rehearing motions at the urging of appellants seeking pardons before Governor Miriam A Ferguson leaves office. Among those dropped were Herman Garza Williams and Cruz Martinez, sentenced to death in Webb County for murder tied to the Slapata county killing of oil geologist Sterling Huntley.
