Harold E Dahl 28 of Campaign Illinois captured by Spanish Nationalists while flying for the Loyalists is under an automatic life imprisonment sentence. He had been sentenced to death last fall but was commuted after pleas from his wife Edith Rogers Dahl. Dahl is hospitalized after an appendicitis operation weeks ago.
The United States embassy sent a formal note to the Soviet foreign office asking if Ruth Marie Rubens of New York is under arrest in Russia and, if so, the charges. The inquiry follows Rubens and Donald L. Robinson, who arrived in Moscow together and disappeared in December.

Three Germans were executed by guillotine at dawn in Berlin on January 6. Two were convicted of treason and one of espionage as the sentence was carried out.
Paris obituary reports philosopher and short story writer Han Ryner died Thursday at age 77. Born earlier, Ryner gained recognition for his literary and philosophical works and influenced 20th century European thought.
In Rome, Mussolini announced Italy will immediately start construction of two 35 000 ton battleships two 35 500 ton battleships to rival France and Britain. He said 12 scout ships and many submarines would follow as part of a larger naval program. The Littorio Veneto battleships are already under construction.
In Marion Arkansas on January 7, Frank Carter age 26 and Theo Thomas age 28 were found guilty of assaulting a white girl by a jury of 11 white men and one black juror, and were sentenced to electrocution on February 8. The 18 year old victim identified the defendants on the witness stand, and the juror John Claybrook a 66 year old farmer timberman from Topaz Arkansas marked a historic presence in such a trial.
Former world heavyweight boxing champion James J. Tunney announced at New York on January 7 that he would serve as Chairman of the American Distilling Company to advance the general public welfare. He condemned high pressure sales tactics and intrusive advertising.

Kenneth Read of Big Spring Texas was diagnosed with spinal meningitis at Norman Oklahoma. Dr W A Fowler urged cancellation of all large student meetings for ten days and ordered examinations for 15 other residents of Read s boarding house after Read fell seriously ill on Sunday.
President Roosevelt nominates Charles B. McLaughlin of Nebraska to be assistant secretary of labor succeeding Edward F. McGrady who resigned. The nomination includes George A. Cook of Illinois as a member of the national mediation board for the term ending February 1 1939.
Weather observers report a typhoon moving from a point in the Pacific about 300 miles east of Samar toward the Philippine Islands.
