Efforts to identify a man found dead yesterday morning in the railroad terminals here centered today in Trinidad. Members of the sheriff's force located two transients who had talked to the man a comparatively short time before his body was found and learned the victim came from Trinidad. Some of the man's effects bore the name of a Trinidad business house. The victim, at Griges chapel, was crushed and suffocated when caught by a shifting shipment of scrap steel.
Miss Dolly Sheedy 37 is recovering at Mrs. W A Edwards 805 Georgia Street after a gasoline stove she was lighting exploded yesterday morning. She suffered severe burns on both arms and her face as the McDaniel household at St. Francis reported the accident.
The Day of the Epiphany will be celebrated with Holy Communion at 10 o'clock tomorrow at St Andrew's Episcopal Church. The Daughters of the King will observe corporate communion during the celebration conducted by Rev P A Foster.
Amarillo police joined the hunt for Beatrice Shearer, 44, missing from Pampa, at the request of Pampa authorities. The records note additional recent disappearances of youths from Amarillo, Borger, and Pampa as officers broaden the missing persons case.
Mrs. Johnson, stabbed late Tuesday night at Lewis Hotel in St. Anthony’s Hospital, was reported improved today. No charges have been filed in connection with the case, according to officers.
The new constabulary administration made its first arrests last night when Deputy Riggins picked up two men and charged them with theft Theyre & C Gilley and S W Chars. They were accused of taking pennies from weighing machines on the streets. Offices said one of the men had more than 330 pennies when he was arrested.
Lonnie Langston a leading insurance man from Lubbock will address a Saturday noon gathering of the Northwest Texas Underwriters Association at the Capitol Hotel. Attendees hail from across the Panhandle and Langston also teaches insurance courses at Texas Tech.
Harry D. Petheram soil conservation forester advised on trees and shrubs suited to the Plains at Amarillo Hotel. City Lake planting program planned. President Alton Reeder presided. The club voted to affiliate with the Texas Wildlife Federation and sent a licensing reform petition to Rep. Jack Little. A WPA project for City Lake facilities was proposed, chaired by Bill Howren. Eighteen new members raised total to 144.
Sheriff M E Cantrell of Randall County in Canyon announces Blaine C Cosgrave of 2906 Tyler Street as deputy sheriff for the Randall County portion of Amarillo. Cosgrave will open the deputy office at his home this afternoon, succeeding W L Lyons and noting Amarillo office phone 7342.
Funeral arrangements are pending for Mrs Eva D Marvin wife of John E Marvin Magnolia Petroleum Company industrial sales manager. She died yesterday in a local hospital at age 30 after eight years in Amarillo. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survived by husband three sons A W 14 Richard Compton 4 and 2 EB Jr 6 and her parents Mr Mrs John Warren Tulsa Oklahoma two brothers Anie Warren and Henry Warren Tulsa. Body in state at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Chapel pending arrangements.
Pat Flynn, connected with the Will Rogers Highway Association, travels to Tucumcari for a Chamber of Commerce meeting. The event marks the first meeting of the new year and inaugurates a new board of directors. Roy Smith continues as secretary in Tucumcari.
Deputy Sheriff Milt Cunningham returned to duty after several days away following an attack. Deputy Gib Landis was confined at home with flu and a severe cold.
More than 600 children in 13 Amarillo schools received free lunches yesterday. Dietitian Helen Worley says many show malnutrition signs. The program uses surplus Texas Relief Commission foods, with local bakeries donating bread. Milk, meat, and vegetables are in short supply. donations are urged to continue daily hot meals.
G. A. McCullough, local chairman of the President's Birthday Ball committee, announced a planning meeting for the Amarillo event will be held tomorrow evening at 7 15 at the Amarillo Hotel. He urged a representative from every Amarillo civic and club organization to attend.
J M McDaniel Jr a 39 year old convict pled guilty in 47th district court at Canyon to cow theft and was sentenced to two years by Judge F E C Nelson. He was taken to Canyon on a bench warrant from the Texas prison and will be moved to Deaf Smith County for a separate cattle theft case. He had faced eight years in potential terms before the sentence.
Markets show 1,000 cattle and calves with varied gains. Prices inch higher for calves and feeder categories, beef steers and yearlings steady to strong, cows holding. Sheep and lambs steady to 25 cents higher, with ranges for fed lambs and native lambs noted across weight classes. Top cattle prices around 7.60 for light weights, heavier cattle from 6.90 to 10.00 for fat grades.
The Point Adams coast guard station received an SOS from the freighter Point Bonita reporting it aground three miles seaward from the North Jetty at the Columbia River mouth.
Credit expert Ed Moran, head of the Central Division of the National Association of Credit Men, will address Amarillo wholesalers and manufacturers at a luncheon at the Amarillo Hotel. He will discuss forming a Panhandle wholesale credit association with R. L. Vance assisting. More than 70 local business leaders were invited by Rolla Townsend, executive secretary of the Amarillo Credit Association.
