The 1934 Congress convened with Joseph Burns as speaker pro tempore and Garber presiding in the Senate as roiling debates over relief and the economy begin. Word swirls of a Roosevelt "surprise" on unemployment relief and a broad long term program.
The New Jersey case against Bruno Richard Hauptmann opens with rapid evidence, as prosecutors allege he kidnapped and killed Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. The state shows estate charts and asserts the crime occurred on the Lindbergh property. Justice Trenchard denies a defense mistrial request as Wilentz describes the grisly sequence and demands first degree murder.
Miss Elsa Sittell, 31, of New York, held for ten days after calling Hitler a Jew, was released and allowed to stay in Germany. She had traveled to see her parents and to vote in the Saar Basin plebiscite on January 13.
A House Interstate Commerce sub committee proposed creating a new federal agency to govern the petroleum industry. The plan would absorb many regulatory duties now scattered across departments while praising Oil Administrator Harold Ickes for past results and recommending changes to the current regulation structure.

The board fears relief load after February 1 when federal funds end. A church cooperation committee led by Bishop Lucey and Bishop Seman was formed with other religious and medical leaders. Floy Boyd named office director of the new social service exchange to coordinate relief agencies and reduce duplications.
Washington and Austin issued year end calls for the condition of banks as of December 31. Comptroller J F T O’Connor requested national bank condition reports. FDIC and FSRC also issued calls for member banks’ December 31 statements.
Kansas City report says the defense in the trial of seven charged with conspiracy in the Union Station killings of five men on June 17, 1933, rested at 11:55 this morning.
Amarillo and west Texas forecast fair through Friday and Saturday with colder conditions tonight. New Mexico also fair tonight and Friday with cooler air in east and south portions tonight. Temperature extremes today range from 31 to 35 degrees.
Washington January 3 A Tennesseean ascended to the speakership of the House and gained power unseen since Nicholas Longworth. Joseph Wellington Burns defeated Bertrand W Snell to lead a Democratic House eager to reshape committees by giving Republicans only one quarter of seats. The move aligns with the administration’s favored reforms and reflects a pivotal historical moment as Burns, 65, follows a lineage from James K Polk and Andrew Jackson through The Hermitage visit by Roosevelt in a past summer.

Amarillo police continue search for a lone bandit who robbed two filling station attendants last night removing more than 50 dollars. The suspect is described as about five feet six inches tall, light complexion, brown clothing and smoked glasses. Robberies occurred at Phillips station 3821 West Sixth Avenue and Magnolia station 3510 Harrison Street with 21.72 and 35.00 taken respectively. A burglary at J R Mellheran’s 510 East Seventh Avenue occurred while the residence was empty.
Gov. Futrell ordered National Guardsmen to Stone and Independence Counties to aid posses in searching fog and protecting Robert Rose, a Brock Mountain resident accused by Sheriff Engles of killing Deputy Sheriff Everett Wheeler during an attempted arrest at a mountain shack. Rose’s companion Woodrow Strohn was arrested. Rose fled into North Central Arkansas mountains after the shooting yesterday.
Fifteen miners remained underground at the Baska mine in Katowice on the eighth day of a death by own action strike. Thirty miners surfaced hungry after the day before, while wives petitioned the government to intervene to settle the dispute and secure work for their husbands.
