A cold mass sweeps into the Panhandle bringing a thin snow and ice coating that hazards traffic in Amarillo and highways. Officials warn motorists as forecasts show a low tonight near 16 and clearing weather Tuesday. Moisture supply remains limited with little moisture expected.
The report notes light snow and warm winds in parts of Texas with a line between mild and wintry conditions. Dr. R P Parcells and wife Rue Paula recently visited Chicago with three feet of snow on Pine Avenue. Amarillo faces light snow and strong winds 20 to 25 mph, ending by evening. other areas expect rain and snow, with low temps from 15 to 32 across regions. Washington, Jan. 2. Atomic Commission Chairman Gordon Dean stated that Russia does have the atomic bomb. He cited public debate over whether the Soviets exploded one in 1949 and noted Congress may revisit the Atomic Energy Act to loosen information exchanges with the United Kingdom and Canada. Dean outlined plans to speed up atomic engine work for submarines, and said Savannah River and Paducah plants will not be completed this year. He predicted more uranium from the Colorado River plateau sources.
Civilians flood across bridges south of Seoul as South Korea debates abandoning the capital. Red forces push from multiple fronts aided by a major aerial assault and flank attacks near the east coast. UN and South Korean units retreat up to 12 miles while holding prepared positions.
North of Seoul January 2. Chinese forces surged eastward after a costly frontal assault along the Imjin River. The Reds aimed to split the United Nations line and drive a wider breach on the Korean front.
In heavy weather the initial penetration by hostile forces damaged a unit of the ROK First Division and forced a slow withdrawal toward main defense lines north of Seoul. The new eastward Red thrust targeted a South Korean battalion and nearby American division as ROK division HQ monitored the shift.
A Tokyo report cites an unnamed reliable source alleging Soviet Marshal Grigori Zhukov is directing Chinese armies from Mukden in Manchuria with a joint Russian Chinese HQ. Lin Piao reportedly acts as Zhukov's deputy, as claims circulate about future Soviet leadership in Korea.
The expiring 81st Congress sent to the White House a civilian defense bill granting home front powers in case of attack. A $20 billion defense-spending bill was also approved, lifting total fiscal-year funding to about $43 billion for armed strength. The 82nd Congress opens tomorrow amid a sharp foreign policy dispute between isolationists and internationalists.
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Jordan welcomed a daughter at 1609 Bowie weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces. Mr. Jordan leads Curry Motor Freight and McKnight Transfer and Storage. The baby was named Jane Ellen and narrowly missed a New Year’s birth by 4 hours 14 minutes.
Light snow and strong winds with drifting flurries across Amarillo and vicinity. Colder tonight with clearing by Wednesday, milder by afternoon. Panhandle outlook expects general improvement midweek, with colder tonight and rising temperatures Wednesday afternoon. West Texas and New Mexico sections note cloud cover, intermittent precipitation, and temperature shifts through the period.
Russia told the western powers it does not object to a preliminary deputies conference to set an agenda for a Big Four foreign ministers meeting. Moscow broadcast the note delivered to U S Britain and France on December 30, signaling Moscow’s openness to including Communist China in discussions and proposing the talks be held in Moscow Paris or London rather than the United States.
Nationally known builders eye Amarillo defense work as Seaboard Construction plans to bid on rebuilding and operating Pantex. Harry F. McFarland says he will travel to Washington to offer services to the Defense Department and has kept in touch with past Pantex leaders who are ready to return if awarded the contract.
In Studio City a party attended by Sonny Tufts and other stars ended early as promoter Stephen Van Boytham, 43, lay with a fractured skull after claims of a fall or a fight. Police seek a suspect, while guests offered conflicting versions of the incident.
