A Colorado snowstorm moves southeast toward the Panhandle and may reach Amarillo with light snow. Temperatures are set to fall to around 30 degrees tonight then drop further Wednesday, threatening livestock but bringing needed moisture for winter wheat.
Former Oregon governor Oswald West derides Charles Keck panels for The Cattle Round-Up at the Nelson gallery. He cites double reins, Pelham bits, and saddle saddles hornless while contrasting Remington and Will James styles with stockyard riding reality.

Addison Nedeau twenty four year old son of Ed Nedeau former city chief of detectives and now a special officer confessed to firing the shot that killed Mrs Clarence Potts as she rode home from a New Year dance in Topeka Kansas. County attorney Lester Goodell said the charge would be some degree of manslaughter.
Oklahoma moves to implement a new law targeting habitual criminals and the hopelessly insane for sterilization. About 2,000 people statewide are subject to the measure, with 20 criminals and 40 inmates at one mental hospital slated for action after board hearings and warden recommendations.
Leota Childress an 18 year old hid the foster parents money, wrote a coded note, then was shot when she could not summon help. Four men Porter Taft Blaine Norman and Jesse Brewer are jailed in Wilkesboro on complicity charges. The note led to the cash hidden in a tobacco cellar.
Arthur Brisbane observes time moving toward 1934 and urges merit as recognition. He praises E. V. Weller's Keats autobiography from Stanford University Press for its comforting, hopeful portrait of the poet. Mrs. Dilke’s 1818 letter vignette contrasts with Keats's enduring language.
The Veterans Bureau says more than half of 51 213 veterans with presumptive battle wounds will be dropped from pension rolls after boards found 21 955 were actually wounded. RFC reports foreign gold purchases exceed 50 million dollars as it reiterates 34.06 per ounce for new U S mine gold. Congress eyes extending agricultural aid to beef cattle and meat packing reform, with Wallace proposing an amendment and a 200 million dollar production program.
Amarillo postal receipts rose by 1312.70 in December 1933 compared with December 1932 as mail volume increased. Sub stations in San Jacinto and North Amarillo posted gains while the downtown post office fell 302.84 due to holiday closings and a postage rate change. Central office total was 27750.13 versus 28070.97 last year.
Brokers clerks walked out for fifteen minutes on the Paris Bourse in protest of several dismissals blamed on a slump in business. Brokers stated the firings were necessary due to the reduced activity.

A Frank Russell Petroleum No. 1 Reno oil well near East Oklahoma City was engulfed in flames after an explosion. One man, M. L. Stephens, was badly burned and hospitalized. The blaze burned for a full day following the October blast in a tightly drilled area just outside the east city limits.
York South Carolina reports 2793 marriage licenses issued in 1933, up from 2707 in 1932. Probate Judge Nunn announced the figure as the town of York, with a population of 2827, continues to be a regional center for marriages.
The Amarillo post office issued an attractive booklet on air mail for businessmen. It features a photo of the new air mail plane, a nationwide air line map, and schedules from Amarillo to any U S point effective January 1 1934. Mrs Floyd Cooper sponsored the brochure and a 1933 post office order is quoted urging special handling of air mail.
President Roosevelt announced federal deposit insurance up to 2500 dollars effective for all banks except about three percent of depositors. FDIC head Walter J. Cummings reported 13423 banks insured, with plan to extend coverage to 10000 dollars by 1934, and to require state banks to meet standards while national and Fed member banks are covered. Senator Vandenberg praised the move as providing safety for depositors.
After a 10 day vacation about 10 000 Amarillo school children returned to classrooms this morning. Amarillo College students avoid return until Friday per President B F E Masters. Many students from Amarillo have gone back to colleges nationwide.
Fort Worth banks and firms placed bids for part of 2 750 000 relief bonds to be issued by the state. The Fort Worth National Bank acts as fiscal agent with J L Lafferty secretary of the Texas buy a bond movement. Officials expect quick sale and delivery hoped between January 1 and 15.
Harrisburg Pa January 21 Pennsylvania launches a state controlled liquor monopoly under a three man board of control Governor Pinchots plan becomes law and the system opens with about 90 stores and aims for nearly 300. The state will regulate all liquor entering or leaving Pennsylvania and employ about 1500 workers with an annual payroll exceeding 2 million.
Deputy Sheriff Guy Wright and Sheriff Guy Pierce were shot at close range during a liquor raid on Shoffitt’s Clarendon home. Wright was blinded in his left eye and treated at St Anthony’s hospital. Shoffitt, charged with assault with intent to murder, was jailed after a brief exchange that left multiple bullet holes in the car and walls of the house.
Amarillo city officials say police radio patrol will start within a week. W M Witty of RCA Victor arrives Wednesday to install transmitting and receiving units in five patrol cars. Cars monitor headquarters at City Hall to reach disturbances within five minutes.
The Los Angeles area faced a third catastrophe in nine months as a historic New Year rainfall flooded Southern California. At least 31 people drowned, 27 missing, 35 seriously injured, and hundreds treated after up to 15 inches of rain. Bridges collapsed, roads sunk, and hundreds of homes and cars damaged amid Mt. Montrose floods and prior Griffith Park fire aftermath.
