A jubilant start to 1934 as prohibition ends in many states, with New York’s Times Square revelry and crowded streets. President Roosevelt spends New Year’s Eve quietly with his family as optimism grows for economic recovery.
Arthur Brisbane notes that the Civil War spurred American ingenuity as men learned to adapt. In Miami, contractor John L. Berry’s crew bricks red tiles on a slant roof while Robert Houston lays tile, with the French method praised for preventing leaks.
Washington reports Secretary Roper’s New Year statement praising the New Deal recovery agencies for the most remarkable period of business revival yet seen. He cites higher indicators, stronger banking, farmer income gains, and progress in child labor and wages, with capital-goods activity needing further stimulation.
In Southern California heavy rains caused floods and mudslides. By January 10 authorities reported up to nineteen or twenty three deaths as rescue teams searched debris filled streets around Los Angeles. Highways were closed and vehicles swept away in the deluge.
United Press reports a midwest cold snap with sub zero temperatures in parts of the region. Chicago rose to 48 above zero while Dodge City Iowa reached 62 above and Keokuk 54 as wind sweeps in and ice coats highways.
A lie titled Grandfather's Clock Yarn won the 1933 Liars' Prize with a medal from the Burlington National Liars' Club. Submitted by B. Ceresa of Langeloth Pennsylvania, the tale centers on a pendulum shadow worn hole in a clock.
Borger on main street last night left two carbon plant workers injured as a car struck C Goddard Larson and John Nelson. Nelson suffered a fractured leg and Larson a back injury. Mrs R L Malone and Drew Brown were charged with failing to stop. Police say R L Malone drove and left the scene. Malone, a truck driver for a local oil company, faces DWI and aid-charges.
New York January 1 Fiorello H LaGuardia sworn in as mayor initiating a reform government. He vows to curb political interference in the police and address a municipal finance tangle and alleged ties to Tammany Hall as he outlines early policies at a simple inaugural.
President Roosevelt accepts William H. Woodin’s resignation due to ill health and swears in Henry Morgenthau Jr. as secretary of the Treasury. Woodin’s letter dated December 13 explains his departure from Tucson sanitarium. Morgenthau had served as undersecretary since November 17 and led Treasury affairs in an acting capacity.
Amarillo residents crowded dance halls theaters and clubs to greet 1934 shotking crowds at the Paramount Nat Dance Palace Silver Spray and Cactus Club with 1500 plus at Nat Dance Palace. Police reported orderly celebrations with many businesses closed for New Year while essential offices stayed open.
Wilbur Underhill, nicknamed the tri state terror, lies wounded in a Shawnee Oklahoma hospital after a gun battle with raiding officers at a Shawnee house where he hid with his wife and another couple. The images capture the top photo of him in bed and the lower frame shows the Saturday morning exchange of fire.
Johnny Dade 21 is charged with murder and More Ingram 25 charged as an accomplice in the Christmas Eve axe killing of Roy S. Latham, a 50 year old recluse truck farmer near Alvin. Dade implicated Ingram in an alleged confession made to Sheriff Jimmy Martin of Brazoria County.
Fifty one years ago on January 1 1883 a severe blizzard swept the Panhandle Plains. The cold snap drove snow and wind across Armstrong County as cowboys Lysius Gough Taylor Ray and Percy Drake moved toward Dixon Creek pasture near present Borger. Snowbound a week the norther struck New Year s Eve as the trio slept in a supply tent north and west of Claude.
Wilbur Underhill, wounded in a raid, lay in a municipal hospital as doctors predicted death by sunrise. Federal and state officers pressed for new confessions while Underhill, among the raiders, had admitted six bank robberies and identified another suspect but refused further cooperation.

Six bodies recovered in the La Crescenta area north of Glendale after automobiles were submerged in floodwaters along miles of streets. Thirty missing and thirty five injured were reported as residents struggled through flood waters, with some motorists unable to see in the deep silt.
Professional wrestler Joe Bauer helped a woman at a hotel around 4 AM. He was stabbed during the assault and is hospitalized with non life threatening wounds. Louis Patton and Hank Benton face assault with intent to murder charges in Justice J W Pottinger court with bonds set at 1000 dollars.
Fair conditions in west Texas with cooler readings in the southeast. Partly cloudy skies persist tonight and Tuesday with warmer temperatures expected in extreme west portions.
