Charlie Chaplin, in Beverly Hills, injured his left ankle in a fall while trying to enter his home Saturday night. Dr N Edward Gourson performed surgery to repair torn muscle, leaving Chaplin confined to a wheelchair for at least two weeks as Joan Berry’s paternity suit heads into final arguments tomorrow in Los Angeles.

Bombing Preview For Japan In 1944 End-Year Actions

Allied forces report heavy air raids across Japan in late 1944 with 106,900 enemy planes and over 2,000 ships destroyed or damaged. Mindoro Leyte and Iwo Jima were targets as B-29s and Mitchell bombers struck Tokyo Nagoya Yokohama and other industrial centers. Two Italian POWs Escape From Hereford Camp

One escapee still at large after noon, while the other was captured seven miles west of Hereford. The FBI lists Cp Amato Lurcardi as at large, age 19, 5 feet 7 inches, 157 pounds, gray eyes, light complexion, black hair, wearing prisoner of war or khaki uniform. Three other escapees were captured near Carlsbad, New Mexico Friday afternoon. Also reported, typhus breaks out in Amsterdam per Voice of the Netherlands via London.

Weather Bureau forecast for Amarillo and vicinity warns of a cold wave with partly cloudy skies. Tonight will be much colder with a low around five degrees, Tuesday remains cold with partial cloud cover. Panhandle and South Plains see lower temperatures from sixteen to twenty with colder conditions east and warmer northeast on Tuesday. SHAEF reports approximately 115 captured American officers and soldiers were lined up and gunned by German tanks and guards on Dec 17 near Malmedy during the opening of the counterattack. The massacre followed the capture of a artillery battery and included mass fire from tanks and infantry as prisoners tried to flee.
