American armored units push back Von Rundstedt spearheads after a 15 mile retreat across the Lesse and Homme Rivers into Rochefort. French front lines stiffen as the retreat continues.
The government seeks an immediate federal court ruling on the legality of yesterday's seizure of Montgomery Ward and Company facilities in seven cities. Sewell Avery challenges the order as unconstitutional as 12,000 workers shift to Uncle Sam. A declaratory judgment and injunction are requested.
The Navy reports 1,167 men of war now in service, with 39,971 new vessels built in the past year including 420 fighting ships. Totals show 1,162 warships of various classes since 1941 and 239 vessels lost, as ships migrated to Allied nations and losses adjusted the on hand count.
Japanese high command reports a large convoy of 30 American transports moving west through Philippine waters with 20 plus warships escort. They claim six sunk in a two day attack as air, naval and land activity at MacArthur’s front remained quiet after PT boats and planes routed a Japanese task force near Surigao Strait.

OPA proposed 17.50 per hundredweight plus 50 cents subsidy, with final ruling pending Stabilization Director Fred M. Vinson. The debate included Senators Butler Reed Murdock Johnson and Johnson urging subsidies or opposing ceilings as critics argued on market effects.
