Robert Durham, 19, was jailed in Dawson County after fatally shooting his father A. J. Durham, six miles south of O'Donnell. Neighbors detained him and he was taken to Lamesa. sheriff said no charges beyond possible insanity.
Funeral arrangements are announced for four of the five air crash victims at Hillcrest golf course. R L Allison had services yesterday and will be buried at Groesbeck this afternoon. Clifford N Dillon 82 of Amarillo will be buried Llano cemetery after 3 pm service at Central Presbyterian Church with multiple pastors officiating. Robert McKenzie Moore Jr 39, also at Central Presbyterian, will be buried Llano cemetery with Griggs & Sons directing, pallbearers listed. Additional details note Moore’s Chicago roots and early Amarillo life including National Guard service. A double funeral for Lieut Robert H and Mrs Evelyn Morgan Gray is set for 2 pm Thursday at Central Presbyterian with Rev Rhomsen and Rev Yates officiating. pallbearers named.
United Press reports that administration officials expect a steady 1930 business year with tax cuts, ample credit, and expansion pledges. Mellon and Lamont express cautious optimism about spring revival and long term prosperity amid possible winter slack. Officials foresee continued economic growth and a possible new high level of prosperity.
Constable Allen reports two men arrested at a local hotel for liquor delivery. One gallon of whiskey seized and a car confiscated. Johnson, aided by a federal agent, turned the men over to federal authorities. He says Amarillo is not dry yet.
A sleepy dog-watch reporter in a dim news office wakes as a long bearded stranger enters. The frail old man who runs the office is found dead after the visitor’s arrival, described in terse terms amid a chaotic, quivering scene.
J Aydelott, previously general superintendent of the Burlington System at Halesburg Illinois, was appointed general manager of the Fort Worth and Denver City railway. The move was approved by Gen John A Hulen who became vice president of the road.
A. Walker Kanady and his wife face charges of robbery with firearms and kidnapping in Waco justice court after being returned from Fort Worth. Dr. C. G. Swift Jr. and taxi driver Lawrence Teague were reportedly abducted Saturday night and held at several North Texas locations. Kanady allegedly said the motive was robbery.
A Black man jailed for drunkenness kept the Amarillo Hotel and nearby fire department awake with loud shouts from late night into dawn. He slept briefly as responders prepared to intervene. Two companions shared the same charge on the police blotter.
Bascom Slemp ex secretary to President Coolidge arrives in Amarillo from Washington D C to stay with W D Caldwell at 1606 Taylor Street. Slemp is practicing law in New York City and travels to Amarillo on behalf of the Gibson Oil Company where Caldwell serves as president.
Thomas Stutts a 27 year old Dallas man was killed when his car turned over on the Alma pike near Ennis pinning him beneath the vehicle. Charles Freelove of Dallas was badly hurt and four women were injured. Stutts worked for a Corsican firm of architects on plans for new Corsicana schools and was believed to be returning to Dallas to spend New Year’s Day.
Tickets for Sir Harry Lauder and his company at the January 6 performance go on sale Thursday morning at City Drug Store No 1. Many seats are reserved by mail and advance orders, and Wilbur C. Hawk warns buyers to arrive early to secure good seats as a sellout is anticipated by week’s end.
District civil court under Judge W E Gee saw more than 20 suits filed yesterday at the close of the old year. Seventeen suits arise from promissory notes dated January 2 1923 totaling 50000 in face value with interest amounting to half the principal. No property titles are involved.
United Press reports widespread revelry and solemnity as 1930 arrives. Liquor flows in cities despite enforcement efforts while churches fill and public celebrations erupt nationwide. Radio relays London bells as U S clocks strike midnight and an attempted Australia program rebroadcast fails.
Laredo business leaders traveling to Austin to press Governor Moody for Walls removal will not learn a verdict until Thursday. Moody not in Austin today. reception at the Governor’s Mansion interrupts. Governor’s choice could determine Walls fate amid constitutional limits and Senate confirmation dynamics involving Senator Archer Parr.
Special to the Globe. Austin January 1 The Criminal Appeals Court affirmed a ten year sentence for R B Rhodes of Potter County on criminal assault charges involving his ten year old daughter while in the same hotel room. Family witnesses testified. He is described as past 50.
Dallas keeps the town awake with a raucous New Year scene as about 100000 revelers crowd downtown streets. Police, newly reoriented dry squad in control, mostly overlook minor offenses while corn liquor and gin dealers enjoy a prosperous evening.
AP report from Fort Worth notes two deaths tied to New Year celebrations with one shooting and a holdup. Norman Beachy, 56, of Morrill Kansas, died at the wheel from acute indigestion en route to California. Willie Mae Perry, described as a Negro woman, was shot. Further details on page 2.
Amarilloans danced into 1930 at two large social events while private gatherings filled the city. The night ended with arrests as 26 people celebrated too wetly and 23 faced Potter County Jail with headaches, three in city jail. Slightly colder weather met the celebrations.
Dallas friends will honor Jim Ferguson with a banquet around January 12. The event aims to show appreciation and is non political as Ferguson considers his gubernatorial candidacy. Guests and exact details will be announced later.
Charles Phelps Taft, longtime patron of the arts and former publisher of the Cincinnati Times, died at home in Cincinnati at age 86. Funeral plans were made as his half-brother William Howard Taft, former president and chief justice, prepared to travel to attend services. Taft was noted for contributions to art education and journalism.

A package believed to be a belated Christmas gift exploded in Seat Pleasant Maryland killing one woman and injuring seven others. The dead is Mrs Leona Hall Brady and six of the injured are family members. Leslie Hall 14 lost his left hand. Officials investigate whether the package traveled by mail. The Hall family had recently moved from Woodmorey.
Burglars blew open the bank vault and safe in Goldthwaite Texas on New Year’s night but fled without stealing any items. Police report no clues to the culprits or motive, and Griggs' ambulance was summoned.
Washington Jan. 1 Spokesmen for both sides of prohibition cite 1929 as encouragement and predict optimism for 1930. F Scott McBride of the Anti-Saloon League sees a hopeful sign in officials and Hoover enforcement taking responsibility. Henry Curran of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment notes crime did not drop as predicted and cites President Hoover stressing law enforcement. The leaders avoid taking sides in the Washington dispute as public officials engage the debate. Senate talks loom as Brookhart plans to push prohibition to the floor, while Borah's letter content remains secret.
