Parents Cannot Shed Tears Over Children's Choices

A mother writes about her 22 year old son who plans to marry a girl of questionable background. She fears his idealism and loss of church ties, though she cannot tell him what to do. The piece notes that youth must make mistakes, that couples from different social backgrounds can succeed, and that parents cannot live their children's lives. The column ends urging acceptance of his freedom to choose. A second letter from a reader asks how to cope with a husband who abandoned the family, then returns for the children, urging patience and restrained response.
