Harry H. Blagden 45, a wealthy eastern sportsman abducted from a Saranac Lake cottage last Thursday freed himself in Cleveland after overpowering a kidnapper, seizing a revolver, and fleeing with the aid of a bystander. He was kept in a windowless room above a garage and feared death before his escape and call to police.
Shanghai shaken as heavy artillery roared across Chapei and Kiangwan districts. Japanese air scouts warned of Chinese troop movements while a Chinese official predicted a retreat under the Japanese assault though not a defeat. Mrs Minnie Maddern Fiske famed stage actress died quietly in Hollins Queens at the age of over 50 years in public life. Her husband Harrison Grey Fiske announced the death and had the body taken to a New York undertaker. Her career spanned from 1870 to recent Shakespearian revivals and defined American theatre for generations.

Mt. Van Hoevenberg New York Feb 16 Hank Homburger engineer and world speed record holder in four man bobsleds defended his North American and Amateur Athletic Union title at Lake Placid. His runs 1 55 and 1 53 34 were the fastest on the slide this year and near his world mark of 1 52.
Four men were killed and two injured when a truck carrying workers to the Ford plant in Chester was struck by a Reading Railroad freight train. The truck was dragged about 300 yards before the train halted. Witnesses reported victims scattered in the wreckage.

Arnold, aided by Detective Captain Clark Cain, plans to return to his farm. Deputy Sheriff Shorty Goolsby remained jailed for unrelated theft. Amarillo police recovered goods from the Hogge home theft.
In Austin on February 16 Gov. Ross Sterling appointed Mauzey of Sweetwater as judge of the 32nd judicial district to fill the unexpired term of the late Fritz R. Smith.
Paris February 16 The Laval cabinet and Premier Pierre Laval resigned after a 157 to 134 defeat in the Senate on a confidence vote. The government fell amid the Geneva arms conference, with Laval announcing immediate resignation to President Doumer.

In Kellogg Idaho on February 16 Carl Lund 48 and Carl Arcander 67 were buried when a snow avalanche demolished their cabin. Fellow miners recovered Lund and Arcander after a two day search.
Six people were killed in a snow slide near Trebizond when it swept from Mount Zigana and buried a hotel and a private home. Authorities reported the disaster occurred yesterday, trapping guests and residents.
