Aircraft experts watched Henry White land a plane with hands off the controls at Glenn Curtiss Airport New York. Movable wings set at the landing angle in flight enable a perfect landing. The stunt claims no stall spin or dive.
In Austin on February 16 the Texas Legislature revolted against committee actions and ordered four bills printed despite adverse reports. One bill would elect the state highway commission, a proposal criticized for city influence. A red paper measure was defeated. A minimum wage bill for women and minors, modeled on California, was sent to the clerk. A bill to bar banks from pledging assets as collateral for deposits was also proposed. Representative Farmer pushed a bill on welfare commission reporting duties.
Fort Worth reports A E Stanley aged 62 goes to trial in the Roy Hawthorne torch murder case. Co-defendants Herbert Alvin Stanley and Hugh D Butler already received 99 year terms. Hawthorne was killed July 26 1930 and found burned near Lake Ween. Casstevens faces trial next as an accessory after the fact. Dallas notes Mrs H L Butler 55 mother of Hop Toe Butler held over $500 of morphine seizure. federal conspiracy charges expected. Herbert L Butler in Dallas County jail on robbery with firearms charges.
The Junior College band will perform at Amarillo Fat Stock Show from March 2 to 6. President Wilbur C. Hawk announced the 42 piece group will entertain crowds at all programs and on the streets and fairgrounds throughout the event. Director Wilbur Upchurch said the band will play mornings and afternoons and plan a brief Panhandle tour to advertise the college and the Fat Stock show.
The city expects completion of the improved Amarillo type pavement from Van Buren to Adams Street by Tuesday. N. Stanley, city engineer, announces resumed work with Gober and Thompson holding the contract. The base is finished, weather delays slowed progress, and the street will use the new penetration type wearing surface like in front of Margaret Wills school.
Weather forecast for Amarillo region calls for fair and slightly colder tonight and Tuesday. West Texas expects fair skies with cooler tonight and Tuesday, turning colder in the east. New Mexico stays generally fair with little temperature change. Today's extrema logged at 1 PM are 55 and 35.
Johnny Kytle a nine year air veteran and mail pilot for Eastern Air Transport Company died in a stunt crash at Candier Field Atlanta on February 15. He had survived earlier emergencies including a 1929 parachute escape near Crew Virginia and wrecks at Stone Mountain North Carolina and Old Fort North Carolina.
Mary Pickford will be interviewed by Louella Parsons on a musical cocktail program originated by KHJ Los Angeles and carried by WABC and other stations. The Associated Press Radio Editor notes the Central Standard time listing from New York on February 16.
The Amarillo city commission plans to appoint a new board of equalization within two weeks after the current term ended with the 1930 tax roll certification on December 16. The new board will certify valuations for property in the recently annexed territory, estimated at over a million and a half dollars.
Dr C W Warburton announces farmers may obtain loans for livestock under the $45 million emergency program now in light of a $20 million addition approved by President Hoover. The extra funds allow continued, security dependent borrowing, with allowances for feed loans for non-working stock previously restricted. Officials warn loans may cover existing feed and new livestock needs, following talks with Farm Loan Board chairman Paul Bextor.
The Senate directs a federal trade commission investigation into the cement industry to assess possible violations of anti trust laws. In Des Moines police search the Des Moines River for the body of Eugene Pope 11 who with his brother Dick 6 drowned when ice broke. three other boys were saved. Earl Carrolls musical comedy Sketch Book is raided and closed by police in Chicago last Friday prompting the late wire update.
Postmaster General Brown warned of a postal deficit exceeding 150 million dollars for the next fiscal year. He told air mail operators that to keep government support they must boost business and demonstrate value in speed and progress. He noted the air mail program faces budgetary limits and possible tax increases or spending cuts. Miss Oral Largent left to be with her ill mother in Shattuck Oklahoma.
Senator Sheppard of Texas urged Jouett Shouse to name the states underpinning his claim the Democratic Party would adopt an anti prohibition stance in 1922. The request was voiced in the Senate as Sheppard co authored the 18th amendment.
Lillian Leitzel, famed circus star known as the queen of the big top, died from head and spine injuries after a 45 foot fall during a high rope act at Valencia music hall. Her husband Alfredo Cadona rushed from Berlin to be by her side. she spent 37 years of life with 20 in the United States performing with major circuses.
Joseph Stolarz, 45, allegedly demented, hacked his wife nine times with a hatchet after she tried to aid their 19 year old son burned by boiling water. He was captured after leaping through a second story window and tripped on ice. he is charged with attempted murder. The wife Helen, 39, is in critical condition with skull fractures and burns. Stolarz injured his elbow and hip.
E B Reeser president of the American Petroleum Institute told the Ways and Means committee proration of oil imports is needed to avoid chaos. He noted he did not speak for the Institute in backing the Capper Garner bill to cap imports at 16 million barrels annually for three years. He urged import proration as fair and necessary, warning a coal shift could follow if fuel oil supplies rise. He said the Capper Garner bill could raise domestic producers' market by about 10 percent.
