Resigns Post at College Music Head Joins KVAT Staff

Amarillo College announces the resignation of Folsom D. Jackson after more than eight years as head of the music department. He will join Radio Station KVAT sales staff starting Monday, while the college seeks a new department head. Jackson has 30 years of teaching and 36 years directing choruses, and will continue directing the San Jacinto Methodist Church choir.

Fear 11 Killed In Fire In Apartment Building Collapse

A three story frame apartment house burned before dawn causing 11 deaths and multiple injuries. Fire officials cited an oil burner explosion as the likely cause as floors collapsed and one wall leaned on a telephone pole. A 13 year old girl, Mary Hoage, escaped from a second story porch into deep snow, the sole safeguarded member of her family.

Losses From Two Burglaries Reported In Ama Till0 Businesses

About $600 lost in two Ama tillo businesses and roughly $6 taken in a strong-arm robbery. Detectives investigate a $300-plus loss from the Peoples Finance and Thrift Company safe in the Fisk Building Room 305, with no burglary signs. The Mayfair at 701 Polk reported about $300 minted from a cash drawer, with possible lock in overnight and no forced entry. The Boston Store at 319 East Fourth says intruder demanded money and knocked down owner Adslph Reese, who says about $8 was taken from the cash drawer.

The body of rancher Ben Davis was found frozen in a snow rift about 35 miles west of Clayton. Dan Black, a 65 year old rancher, is missing after accompanying Davis on his last journey. Sheriff Goodson said Black’s whereabouts are unknown and a plane crew reported a man waving from the Black ranch, but identification was not possible.

Amarillo General Mills workers vote to strike

Union employees at General Mills in Amarillo voted 100 percent for a strike backing by the American Federation of Grain Processors AFL. Local No. 21338 secretary Fred O Truex said the vote was taken two weeks ago and will be forwarded to the federation in Minneapolis. The master contract with six major flour mills expired Feb 1 and negotiations continue with no strike date set. Frigid morning kept farmers from bargains but noon crowds flocked for marked down bacon and pork meats. First grade bacon fell from 89 to 69 cents, sausage from 59 to 49 cents, premium ham from 69 to 39 cents, pork roast to 39 cents on special, Crisco and Snowdrift down from 1.00 to 1.19 per pound, average drop around 2 cents while retail fell about 10 cents. City Fire Credit Cuts Insurance for Amarillo Areas

Amarillo earns a 10 percent good fire record credit effective March 1, reducing fire insurance costs on city properties. Credits, based on losses reported to the fire insurance commissioner, apply to policies written after March 1 and could save about 2 to 6 thousand dollars on three year premiums.
