Miners Die After Sitdown Strike Down 600 Feet Deep
Fourteen anthracite miners died in a Lansford Pennsylvania mine shaft 600 feet below the surface during a sitdown strike over pay deductions for quitting early. Mr and Mrs E C McBride of Pan Tex Village welcomed a girl born this morning in a liquor truck en route to St Anthony Hospital. The birth occurred near English Field on U S Highway 60 around 7 30 as the family traveled to the hospital. The father said he feared stopping for fuel. The baby weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and was kept warm in a heater cradle. Mother and daughter are reported well. father remains shaken. The couple has three other children.
