In Austin Texas the opening clash on the racing bill to allow contribution wagering at tracks unfolds with ministers speaking against the proposal. The House State Affairs Committee chaired by Rep Morse hears testimony as clashes erupt over the repeal of a three day marriage notice clause and printing of testimony on rural aid school charts.
Charlie Chaplin turned down a 26 talk radio contract worth 650000 and a separate 130000 transcription offer to keep his silent persona. In Washington a mail truck holdup at Union Station yielded only mutilated currency, with old bills cut in half and halves already received earlier. Peter Johnson, in charge of 28 registered sacks from the Federal Reserve to the treasury, was assaulted by the robbers as the theft occurred around 2 to 3 am. Police and government officials search for the culprits as the treasury notes the missing halves.
Tom C. Johnson former Wheeler County deputy sheriff was found guilty of murder and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary for the October 11 slaying of George Brooks at a Shamrock cafe. The jury deliberated since Wednesday afternoon and defense planned a motion for a new trial with an appeal likely if denied.
Two performances of Tony Sarg's Marionettes at the Municipal Auditorium Saturday have no reserved seats. Alice in Wonderland plays at 2 30 PM Saturday. Rip Van Winkle at 8 15 PM. Students under 15 admitted 25 cents. adults 50 cents.
Americans mark the 122nd birth anniversary of Abraham Lincoln with tributes in schools and halls. In Springfield the Japanese ambassador Katsuji Debuchi calls Lincoln a world figure whose lessons mankind should heed.
John Thomas Taylor chairman of the American Legion National Legislative Committee in Washington says reports tying two Legion heads to opposition of the Wright Patman adjusted compensation bill are false. He predicts the bill will be reported today and passed Monday. Hal Brennan state Legion commander will speak Friday at Municipal Auditorium on the committee attitude while Congressman Patman backs the measure.
The Reichstag adopted resolutions calling for abolition of the war guilt clause and protesting German disarmament while other powers ignore treaty terms. The measures, pushed by the Peoples and Catholic parties, passed as Communist and Fascist motions were rejected. A separate motion to open negotiations with Young Plan signatories gained 814 to 46 support.
The Senate committee on governor's appointments postponed until a later date the consideration of Frank Baldwin of Waco for the state board of education. Baldwin had been named to the board by former Governor Dan Moody.
Weather forecast for Amarillo and surrounding region calls for light rain and a drop in temperatures tonight with partly cloudy skies later. West Texas experiences cloudy conditions with local showers and colder air, while New Mexico should expect snow or rain in the north and showers in the south. Temperature extremes today reached 46 and 42 degrees.
Amarillo moves toward amending its city charter to allow longer pavement payment terms up to ten years and lower interest rates, and to authorize bonds for park improvements. A special session adopted a resolution for an election notice, with the ordinance introduction set for March 5.
Galveston Texas February 12 murder charges were filed against Tommy Reis in the slaying of jail guard Joe Meyer during Reis escape. Reis, serving a 35 year sentence for beating and robbing an elderly woman, was later captured in Houston. County Attorney Ralph Crawford said jail trusty Claude Pond identified Roy Britton as the man who fatally wounded Meyer. Sam Rivette, also charged in Meyer's slaying, was allowed to confer with an attorney.
In Akron Ohio on February 12 a blaze at attorney Joseph F Sourek's home trapped two children Elizabeth 16 and Joseph Francis 6 in a bedroom and they died. The father mother and another child Rose 14 were hospitalized after being burned lightly as kerosene started the fire.

McKnight wins the North Houston bid at 7414.90 for two course Amarillo type pavement. West Texas Construction Company secures both Twenty second and Nineteenth Avenue bids at 7224.64 and 2709.16 respectively.
Excavation for the North Fillmore Street subway will start Monday after a survey showed progress by four five hour shifts tearing up brick pavement and concrete base over Rock Island and Fort Worth Denver railroad crossings. Thirty plus men per crew are employed with a steam shovel, sledge hammers, and trucks to move rubble to city section park for rip rap work at the dam.
Amarillo cooks place orders for pies and cakes for the Ama ryllis Flour Contest at Globe News School of Cooking. The Great West Mill and Elevator Company sponsors a $100 prize baking contest with judging by Miss Dorette Durand. Proceeds from sale of cakes and pies go to the Junior Welfare League Children’s Clinic fund.
