Supt Mahoney notes box car demand tied to 1944 grain crop and export Wheat movement. He cites increased orders for tight cars by terminal mills and grain elevators as a key factor. The Santa Fe experienced peak shortage the week ending Jan 29. by March 18 the shortage had disappeared.
Warren Phillips, a Navy gun crew member aboard a Liberty ship, returned from nine months at sea with a cargo of 300 monkeys bound for infantile paralysis research and about 75 000 tons of rubber. The ship visited Oran Algiers Colombo Ceylon and Calcutta before Suez Canal transit. Phillips spoke of India’s orphaned children and cremation furnaces. He and his wife visited in Amarillo area then headed to Tulsa to see his parents.
State Soil Conservation supervisors will meet in Amarillo on March 29 led by W. C. Marshall, a pioneer in Texas conservation and state administrator. Other district meetings follow March 30 at Spur and April 21 at Plainview to elect a new board member replacing W. M. Deck, who moved to Oklahoma.
