He notes the public’s genuine kindness mixed with pressure and loss of private life, accepting fame while mourning lost personal serenity. He worries the push of public attention intrudes on life with family and old friends.
Moscow radio claimed the Oder Line had been breached with seven bridgeheads along the Berlin front and Paris battle reports said 5,000 Germans killed in a day. Zhukov's forces widened the east bank wedge toward Berlin while Gustav line pockets and fortifications continued to fall.

Pvt. William H. Edwards of the Fourth Infantry Division detailed his 70 hour ordeal after stepping on a German land mine in the Haertgen Forest. Wired around the body to serve as a living booby trap, he lay in darkness while German patrols and medics fought over his rescue before fellow soldiers freed him. He is now recovering at McCloskey General Hospital and hopes to return to his wife and six children in Hayti Missouri.
