Valentines and the rise of sentimental cards in America
History notes the growth of the Valentine industry from 14 makers in 1858 producing 300000 dollars worth of cards, employing 100 people, and featuring three dimensional designs. By the 1890s sentimental Valentines dominated, with themes from “To Someone I Like” to “Somebody Special,” while humor cards appealed to women and sentimental ones to men. Christianity reached Iceland around A.D. 1000.
