Hazlewood proposes a state license for master journeyman and plumbing inspectors earned by exams or demonstrated fitness. The bill would invalidate city plumbing examining boards in Texas while preserving municipal codes. The Senate adjournment follows executive session confirming most Stevenson interim appointees and flagging several nominations for future action.

O Max Gardner former North Carolina governor and newly confirmed ambassador to Great Britain died at age 64 in New York at the St. Regis Hotel from coronary thrombosis. He and his wife were to sail today with son Ralph to assume duties at the Court of St James. White House announced the death. Truman had appointed him last December to succeed W Averell Harriman.
The House Un American Activities Committee disclosed a new charge against Julius Eisler for contempt after he refused to testify. Investigators plan to charge him with failure to register as a foreign agent, income tax invasion, and passport-perjury, with Justice Department prosecutions urged and deportation held in abeyance.
German Communist Eisler tells House committee he is not a spy or agent but a refugee seeking home. He calls hearings the start of a new season of red hunting and complains of red-baiting as unfair and unjust. Louis Budenz had described Eisler as a top behind the scenes leader of the Communist movement in Moscow.
City officials confirmed that Carl Knupp will continue as airport manager of the municipally owned English Field. The meeting with representatives from Pioneer Air Lines Braniff and TWA included plans to improve cafe service terminal facilities and staffing while keeping operations on the west side for now. Mayor Joe Jenkins attended the conference.
Cal Parley receives a letter questioning if Pinkey Vineyard of Amarillo could be a long lost brother from Baltimore. The note cites Pinkey as president of the Amarillo chamber of commerce and mentions his birth at 1200 Polk Street, with Folster noting Pinkey is out of town and unavailable for comment.
W B Hess driver for Veterans Free Cab Company reported three men in a car slugged him early this morning and stole his taxi. Hess said the assault occurred after a chase from a night club in the 4400 block North East Eighth to the 900 block West Sixth where he was forced to halt and dumped near the Children’s Home. Crowder, company manager, added the car was found behind the office at 915 Pierce upon Hess’s return. Police received the call about 3 30 this morning with Hess noting the slugging occurred around 130 this morning.
The report notes high thin cloudiness with strong north winds and dust in Amarillo and vicinity, winds diminishing and colder tonight. West Texas expected partly cloudy and slightly warmer inland, colder near Panhandle and South Plains tonight with lows 22 to 28 degrees in Panhandle and South Plains, 28 to 30 degrees in the upper Pecos Valley. New Mexico sees fair skies today through Friday with little temperature change. tonight’s lows 25 to 35 north and 30 to 40 south. The 24 hour high was 64 and low 33 with moon phase 51 degrees.
Amarillo will host the 1947 Texas Press Association convention after unanimous selection by the Fort Worth executive committee. Rex Baxter of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce attended the Fort Worth meeting as Panhandle representative alongside Biull Rutherford and Van W. Walerson. Dallas-area officers listed include Paul M. Parks of Wolfe City as vice president and Deskins Wells of Wellington as secretary treasurer.
A peppery north wind stirred light dust in the Panhandle with peak speeds of 30 to 35 mph. Forecaster H. C. Winburn said dust probably won’t be severe, while temperatures drop from yesterday’s 64 to a 55 high and 25 low for tomorrow. Continued cool weather with a 41 degree high and lighter winds is forecast.
A soldier at Fort Dix, NJ, said by Army authorities to have dated Elizabeth Short in Los Angeles on January 9 four days before her murder, was held in the Fort Dix stockade as Army authorities await word from Los Angeles police.
Jim Lumpkin's appointment to the Seventh Court of Civil Appeals in Amarillo was confirmed by the Texas Senate. He will take oath as associate justice after official notice, resigning from the 47th district attorney's office once confirmation is received. Lloyd King awaits Senate action for the district attorney post.
Walter Irvin Inc announces purchase of True Trailer and Equipment Co. 2501 North East Eighth to host Ford dealership truck sales and service. The 131 by 156 foot facility will be the Middle West’s largest and most complete truck layout with body paint trim shops and a re rebuilding department. About 50 workers to be employed. A 100 foot showroom and living quarters for truckers are planned. The project, approved in Detroit, aims to make Amarillo a national truck service hub with investments exceeding 100000 dollars.
A North Amarillo Kiwanis Club committee filed a petition with postal authorities for reestablishment of a North Amarillo sub-station post office. About 4,000 names supported restoring service. action pending Postmaster and Washington survey.
Chicago today reports R. B. Heehler received three traffic charges after being cited for speeding in Oak Park at 4 35 PM and again at 4 50 PM. Four hours later officers stopped a car and found Heehler the driver. he will explain all three charges to a police judge.
Washington reports that Russia Britain and Australia advised the United States to postpone American control of Pacific Islands under UN trusteeship until after a Japanese peace treaty. Britain and Australia reportedly accepted the general idea of American control.
Hollywood reports a boy born to Sue Carol and Alan Ladd at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital weighing 8 pounds 11 ounces. The couple already have a daughter, Alana, who is three years old.
Dr. Marco Antonio Gaxiola a Johns Hopkins graduate and major in the Mexican Army announced a herd of 150 cows at La Concha Dairy cured of hoof and mouth disease in ten days using urotropine injections. He said two untreated cows died and none have relapsed.
