American forces push across Manila as the 1st Cavalry and 37th Infantry enter the capital. Manila free area expands with Grace Park Air Field seized and Japanese garrisons breaking under advancing U.S. troops amid fires and still intact Malacanang Palace.
American First Cavalry Division tanks breached the gate at Santo Tomas Prison Camp in Manila freeing about 3,000 men women and children of the United Nations. Japanese commandant Colonel Hayashi attempted surrender for safe passage but was rejected. Hostages were released and guards eliminated as cavalry moved room by room through the campus.
Soviet forces flood the Oder line from Breslau toward Brieg and Kustrin while Berlin’s defenses at Frankfurt and Austria face heavy pressure. Moscow reports place a 360 mile front in combat with Konev’s troops reaching Grottkau and Barwalde, threatening Berlin from the east.
American 21st Corps under Maj. Gen. Milburn crossed south of Colmar and linked with French Fourth Moroccan Division near Rouffach. The Colmar pocket shrank to under 200 square miles as Alsace fronts push toward Cernay and Neuf-Brisach, breaking Siegfried Line near Prum and Bonn.
