Armored units move toward Manila as combat forces tighten around strategic areas. Reports indicate heavy troop concentrations, with allied armor prepared for expected street clashes and urban assault operations. The advance follows fresh air and artillery support in the surrounding provinces.
Unopposed American forces push three motorized columns toward Manila Bay from Batangas and Cavite as Maj. Gen. Swing expands the landings into a full invasion. Sixth Army armor advances north of Manila while Japanese resistance remains undeclared.
A wartime report describes Lt Col Henry Mucci’s Sixth Rangers and guerrillas breaching Cabanatuan prison stockade in Luzon on Jan 29 30. The raid freed 513 prisoners, killed about 523 Japanese, and destroyed four tanks, with 23 guerrillas killed. It notes Filipino guerrillas pinpointing the camp and aiding the operation. County tax assessor Frank Hoyt estimated Potter County voting strength for 1945 at 8 500 to 8 700. Five thousand ninety three poll tax receipts issued, deputies handling mail receipts. Yesterday 151 letters postmarked before midnight Jan 30 arrived. About 3 200 persons may receive exemption certificates.

Washington February 2 Opponents of compulsory manpower legislation took their case to the Senate after the House passed the May Bill to place men aged 18 to 45 on a work or face penalty basis by 246 to 165. The House acted after Rep Dewey Short Missouri failed to send the measure back to the military affairs committee by 230 to 183. Chairman Elbert D Thomas Utah said the Senate military affairs panel would meet in a closed session to decide action and possible amendments promising speedy action due to broad support.
Federal court in San Angelo set a Feb 12 hearing on an OPA application to show cause why the State Liquor Control Board may sell 1200 cases of confiscated liquor. About 130 cases come from Amarillo, 99 from Lubbock. items listed for sale in Austin but held at confiscation points until a shipment order arrives. Judge Charles A Boynton ordered the hearing to decide if sales can exceed OPA price ceilings.
Judge Henry S. Bishop ordered the $2,000 bond forfeited for Louis Lucas charged with assault with intent to murder after he failed to appear for his trial. A shooting at a night club on East Tenth led to the warrant and his arrest later that day at his Panhandle-area home where officers found him ill.
Restaurateurs in Amarillo report pepper shakers disappearing from counters and tables amid a shortage of pepper. Managers blame theft for the lack of shakers while pepper remains stocked in bulk. A proprietor notes customers steal shakers not for the containers but for the pepper inside.
