Emergency Relief Administrator Harry L. Hopkins warned Congress must provide more funding or payments end after February 10. He said only 50 million dollars remain to cover about 20 million on relief rolls, usable on a day to day basis for roughly ten days.
A communique reportedly drafted by French circles reaffirms Germany’s right to arms equality within a general security system. Issuance expected after the Anglo French ministerial conference with the British voicing possible further statements on Europe tension. Griggs Ambulance, Dial 4311.
Eight state experts assert Hauptmann wrote the ransom notes but the defense disputes the Fisch myth. Edward J. Reilly contends Fisch, not Hauptmann, received the $50,000 ransom and notes that the nursery note may be by a left handed writer masking handwriting. The Coast Guard cutter Apache reached Holland Island in the Potomac River mouth and rescued Cornelius Wallace, a Department of Agriculture agent, and J F Sneade after they were marooned for days by severe storms and zero weather. An airborne relief drop earlier provided food to the stranded pair.
Boulder Dam Nevada reports a three million pound gate sank into the Colorado River forming a vast new lake. Engineers predict the lake will reach 300 feet against the dam and extend 60 miles back within three months. The river stopped at 7 A M Pacific Standard Time marking a historic moment.
Weatherman H. T. Collman predicts a low near 28 degrees tomorrow morning. This morning’s low was 33 degrees and no rain or snow is expected.
C E Anderson was convicted of killing A E Byers a Bridgeport Lake area grocer and sentenced to 15 years in the Texas state prison.
The Legislature granted Gov. James V. Allred authority to join interstate oil conservation talks with Oklahoma and California delegates. The move aims to prevent waste and avoid price fixing or monopolies while opposing federal control. Oklahoma’s W. J. Holloway is to attend a conference in Austin with Gov. E. W. marland’s delegation.
Governor Allred says he has conferred with legislators to push for full-time state highway commissioners. The term of Commissioner W. R. Ely of Abilene ends February 15, though he remains until a successor is named and Senate confirmed. He cites the vast workload and money managed by the department, noting current monthly two-day meetings.
The bad luck jinx at Madison Square Garden continues as heavyweight Art Lasky from the West Coast is stricken with influenza and withdraws from tonight's bout with James J. Braddock. The note mentions local oil prices at 1900 W. 3rd.
Dr Frank E Townsend appeared before the House Ways and Means Committee to defend his $200 a month pension proposal for those over 60. He rejected the charge that the plan is cock-eyed and warned millions are watching Congress actions on the bill.
Cecil Short’s death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after Allred corrected a stenographer error that dated Governor Ferguson’s proclamation to 1934 instead of 1935. Judge Noland Williams had sentenced Short in Dallas for an $11 hold-up killing of Aaron Jones, 76, with two accomplices receiving life terms.
In Austin the Senate debated a substitute House measure for a sweeping inquiry into official conduct of legislators and state officers. The Rawlings plan would probe outside employment, retainers, passes, and sources of income, with a three member joint House-Senate committee and a $19 000 budget. Some senators preferred the House plan for quicker results, while others backed the broader inquiry.
In New Orleans on February 1 Kenneth Nel, a 28 year old former nightclub entertainer jailed for the murder of Nashville businessman Shef field Clark, was led to the death chamber at Orleans Parish jail. Hangman Henry Meyers prepared the noose and Nel shouted a brief farewell before the trap dropped.
Henderson Feb 1 Clyde Still 19 of Overton was arrested for failure to stop and aid after the drowning of Mrs Charley Dickinson 50 when her car was forced off a bridge into a creek near Piner Junction Henderson. Still said his cement truck could not stop on the down grade at the one way bridge.
Arthur Brisbane, a widely known American writer, publishes commentary in The Globe. An editorial note states his opinions reflect his views, not The Globe’s. Meantime King Prajadhipok of Siam, in England, contemplates resignation while his subjects threaten to name his 11 year old nephew Prince Ananda Mahidol as king, unsettling Britain amid fears of Japan interests.
County, city and school tax offices faced a heavy mail load as property owners mailed 1934 tax checks before the deadline. Officials expected to finalize figures by Monday, noting higher collections than last year. Miss Jewell Davidson projected about 500 more poll taxes in the week. About 5,000 voters paid taxes at the county office, with roughly 1,050 paying yesterday.
Ernest J. Bourgeois, head of Louisiana's Square Deal Association, was arrested at headquarters Baton Rouge escorted by guards. He was brought to the State House for a hearing into charges against Huey Long as Baton Rouge remains under martial law with thousands of soldiers and police.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for fair skies and a drop in temperatures tonight. Saturday remains fair across West Texas with slightly colder conditions in the north and east, and New Mexico shows little temperature change.
