Lexington Texas February 11 The Lexington State Bank was robbed of six to seven thousand dollars. North Fillmore subway work will run on six hour shifts to give about 100 men daily employment. City Manager Bill Durham discussed the plan with a delegation led by J O Jackson. The workers paraded canyoning a banner seeking work and Jackson said the parade was not a protest and that every effort would be made to provide jobs.
The House Ways and Means committee narrowed veterans relief to two options: a loan plan costing about 500 million dollars and a one fourth face-value payment plan forecast at 860 million. The panel rejected several other proposals and aims to approve one plan the next day with treasury and General Hines advising.
Albert W. Benham once dubbed the one man mint says he is penniless after a career of high returns to investors. He blames enemies for the downfall, vows to repay creditors, and quits the finance world while seeking employment. He admits borrowing on judgment notes and flipping bankrupt stocks to fund purchases.
A forecast notes Amarillo and vicinity will likely see light rain Thursday. West Texas expects increasing clouds and warmer conditions in the southeast, with Thursday remaining cloudy and possible local showers. In criminal district court Florence Walton faces charges of receiving and concealing stolen clothing from the Herring and Young burglary. Defense objects to the search warrant arguing it failed to describe the premises and lacked supporting reasons. Detective Van derpool testified he found five suits and two overcoats, later identified by Herring as his property. Walton is also charged with Dalhart burglary and federal liquor law violations.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet tonight at 8 o'clock at the American Legion Hall. Matters of importance will come before the veterans for disposal. The bonus question will be discussed.
In Austin the Danciger Oil and Refining Company seeks to invalidate Texas oil prorating rules as arguments begin in district court. Judge Wheeler orders limited debate to finish the case this week. Also in Kansas a murder case centers on Jack Brunker in Newton as the victim Lucille Price is found. Fort Worth reports a hanging found in a ditch, Albert Petsch identified as the deceased.
Ann Arbor police conducted the campus’s largest raid, targeting five fraternities Delta Kappa Epsilon Kappa Sigma Phi Delta Theta Theta Delta Chi Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Warrants for 70 students were issued for disorderly conduct after liquor was seized in each house.
Old Fellows of the Texas Tans will greet Fred A. Hahn of Toledo Ohio on Monday February 18 in Amarillo for an official visit by the Patriarch Militant of the World. He will confer with I B Walker Texas department commander and staff and will be honored at a reception with dancing and refreshments.
William A. Carney a 70 year old Panhandle pioneer of Groom died at noon in an Amarillo hospital. He is survived by his wife and eight children Frank John J Gresham of Amarillo and William Charles Edward Robert and Frederick of Groom. Carney was a member of the Catholic Church of Groom. The body will lie in state at Boxwell Funeral Chapel pending funeral arrangements tomorrow.
Funeral services for J A Martin Jr infant son of Mr and Mrs J A Martin will be held at Griggs Funeral chapel at 4 this afternoon The baby died at the family home 1501 East Fourth Avenue at 10 this morning
Special to The Glebe from Austin reports C F Pritchard of Potter County won a reversal of his two year embezzlement conviction and a new trial after criminal appeals court held the trial judge erred by ignoring a jury recommendation for suspended sentence. The jury had urged suspended sentence but no request or charge on that point was made.
The Vatican plans a two language radio address by Pope Pius XI via HVJ with Latin remarks at dedication ceremonies and Italian remarks to follow. NBC and Columbia networks will carry the broadcast, with joint coverage planned across national stations.
Ida Louisa Gibby fifteen says she fired a shotgun killing J. M. Gibby at the family farm three miles south of Southmayd after he threatened to kill the family and harm her mother. Authorities plan a preliminary murder hearing and potentially transfer to juvenile court.
In Wheeler Texas prosecutors seek a guilty verdict and penitentiary for Tom C Johnson former Wheeler County officer charged with murder in the George Brooks slaying. The defense seeks acquittal on insanity grounds as testimony wraps up after one day and twenty witnesses. Meanwhile in Pampa Texas the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals affirms a ten year sentence for Johnson on a separate charge of criminal assault on a girl under sixteen while he was deputy sheriff.
