Arthur Brisbane comments on New Year resolutions six days remain to act. He cites Hoover's plan to spend 724 million on public works in 1931 and notes optimism from General Motors' Alfred P Sloan Jr. about a coming prosperity. He urges open minds and decisive action.
United Press tally shows more than 200 accidental deaths during Christmas celebrations nationwide. Fires, poison liquor, traffic crashes, drownings and suicides marked the holiday, with 25 Texas victims and 212 total deaths.
The forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Saturday across Amarillo West Texas and New Mexico with little temperature change. Temperature extremes at 1 pm today were 51 and 25. Sunrise is 7 54 and sunset 5 43 on Saturday.
Mrs. Walter Browne chair of the Christmas Contest committee asks that decorated homes be lit from 8 to 10 pm this week. Last year some houses were unlighted when judges arrived and were dropped from the contest. Winners to be announced January 1.
Amarillo prepares Bivins and Sam Houston Junior High for occupancy by early January with most first floor work finished. Architects Kerr Walsh and J Roy Smith say six of ten classrooms are done while four remain rough. Entire building expected ready by January 5 barring unforeseen problems.
Jose Martinez, a Mexican, was arrested by Olive on charges of stealing a motorcycle. He attempted to flee from police, dashing up steps at city hall and running through three blocks of the business district before being captured. Martinez was moved into county authorities’ custody.
Nine year old John Wesley Harrington received a .22 caliber pistol from Santa for Christmas. While using blank cartridges this Friday morning the weapon discharged and nearly severed his left index finger. He is treated by the Amarillo Potter County Health Unit and may receive a tetanus shot pending parental consent. John Wesley, a Johnson school pupil, uses leg braces and crutches to walk and sells papers for the Globe and News.
Charles Duncan, 23, sentenced to two and a half years for extortion against R. A. Long. Police traced notes to a youth who misspelled street and curbing, admitting threats to the lumberman head of Long Bell.
Democratic House Leader John N. Garner of Texas advocates cash payments to World War veterans, opposing President Hoover and Treasury Secretary Mellon. He backs Patman Rankin and Fish in pushing a bill to pay veterans' adjusted certificates at present value.
A man in a Seventh and Polk drugstore puzzled over where to insert coins into a built in pay phone booth. He finally forced a nickel through a bell cover, triggering a nickel dump. An employee said several customers assume booths are paid and some jam nickels into holes. At Randal Drug No 4 the mischief occurred.
The Ada Oklahoma railway crossing crash claimed Shelby Willis 23 and two other men from a Christmas party. Willis, an Amarillo High School and Bethany College graduate, taught at Ada High School and leaves a widow, parents, and four sisters.
In Quebec's Chibougama district, the wrecked plane of pilot W. H. Cannon and mechanic Leonce Lizotte was found after more than a year. Indigenous scouts located the remains near Roberval and arrangements were made to recover them by air. The fliers departed St Felicies on October 9 1929 with prospectors supplies for Chibougamau.
Five people died after consuming poison liquor across homes streets and transit sites in New York on Christmas. Authorities report more deaths under investigation and 45 others treated for acute alcoholism as Dr. Charles Norris notes the lightest Yuletide toll in three years. Names include John Cochrane 82 Patrick A Breen 42 Andrew Reichert 34 and two unidentified men.
City leaders including Mayor Ernest O Thompson and Chadwick Ayres meet at city hall to launch a winter long effort to provide work for unemployed residents. The drive will involve Chamber of Commerce representatives and women’s groups, with a formal program to be set by year end and radio broadcasts on WDAG to urge relief.
Anna May Wheeler five sustained a fracture of the left thigh a deep forehead laceration and severe bruises after darting in front of a car at 1820 Buchanan Street on Friday morning. She is at St Anthony's hospital in stable condition with no internal injuries. Driver identified as a man named Heffner, first name unavailable, with witnesses saying the car traveled about 16 miles an hour.
Berkeley story reports Miss Charlotte Gay an 18 year old student nurse on Christmas Day tended a crash patient who turned out to be her mother Mrs Henrietta Gay 48. The patient died an hour later in the daughter's arms.
Italo Balbo told Premier Mussolini by radio that 12 Italian seaplanes would likely start their South Atlantic crossing from Bolama in the Portuguese West Africa colony on the night of January 6. The mission aims to Brazil, with Balbo as air minister leading the flight.
The annual East versus West Shrine Game in San Francisco funds Shriners Hospital. WABC and CBS stations relay the broadcast from 4 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. CST led by Ernie Smith. A New Year’s Eve dance program follows on WEAF and WABC with orchestras nationwide starting at 9 p.m. CST and extending to midnight in Buenos Aires.
Dr John Dewey of Columbia University urges Senator George Norris to quit his insurgent GOP course and join a third party. Norris has not replied and notes the practical difficulties of organizing such a movement while Robert H. Lucas backs the GOP effort.
Amarillo police chief W. McDowell found an expensive hand-tooled belt and holster placed in his sock as a holiday surprise. The chief previously scored 45 of 50 at target practice a requirement of a crime prevention campaign.
Kin Hubbard, humorist and creator of Abe Martin, died suddenly in Indianapolis of heart disease. Born in Bellefontaine Ohio he moved to Indianapolis as a young man and launched Abe Martin in 1904. The character thrived in the Indianapolis News and spread to other papers. Hubbard’s last book Abe Martin's broadcast appeared before holidays.
Judge John H. Lyle, a foe of gangsters, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Chicago mayor. He vows to sever crime from politics, promises an efficient police department, and would confront figures like Capone while opposing Mayor William Hale Thompson. Democrat Anton J. Cermak has also announced.
