Don’t Be Cynical Girls Warns Poetess Selma Robinson
Selma Robinson, newly recognized American poet, warns young women not to expect poetry to pay. Her volume City Child, with Rockwell Kent woodcuts, blends lyrical beauty with modern cynicism while she recounts eight years of jotting verses on menus and tickets. Robinson, Brooklyn born, describes a colorful life and rejects poetry as a livelihood, stressing money comes from other work while poetry serves vanity and artistic fulfillment.
