Westwood Calif December 23 Lassen peak towering in a sub zero area in northern California belched forth smoke and gases from its newest crater at sundown yesterday observers reported a large eruption the largest since 1915. A gray smoke cloud rose skyward with the snowy background east of the peak. Daybreak sightseers scanned toward Devil s Kitchen where hot water dashes into a cold creek but the gateway was snowbound obscuring reports.

The Doherty Men's Fraternity of City Light and Water employees held its annual Christmas party at the Nat building in San Jacinto. About 100 attendees enjoyed Santa Claus gift distribution, dancing for two hours to a five piece orchestra, punch and waiter service, and an entertainment committee arranged program starting at 7:30 p.m.
