House and Senate conferees failed to reach agreement on Senate amendments to a 116 million unemployment relief bill. Alabama and Georgia would receive federal road funds with no state matching. A 45 million drought relief appropriation was agreed, half the Senate’s 60 million and House’s 50 million. Firearms mainly automatic shotguns and one high powered rifle were taken from the Sullivan Hardware Company at 612-14 North Fillmore Street. Eleven guns total, with six to eight boxes of shotgun shells left behind. No cash or storeware disturbed. Police found the rear door ajar at 2 am Friday. Raymond Gunn, 30, a negro ex convict, confessed to killing 19 year old teacher Velma Colter after authorities moved to St. Joseph to avert mob violence. Gunn allegedly followed Colter into her school and beat her with a club. He had a prior conviction for assaulting a young girl.
Fort Worth dispatch reports Wallace W. Garrison a 40 year old towerman for the Texas and Pacific railroad drowned early today while fishing at Lake Worth. His body was recovered. The incident occurred during an outing with a companion.
Ellsworth Kan Dec 19 officers sought clues to support a theory that a man found fatally burned in a wrecked car near Kanapolis yesterday was murdered. Investigators labeled the incident a possible homicide as they reviewed evidence and determined a heavy fire had destroyed most identifying details.
Paris reports Raymond Poincare shows steady improvement but requires absolute rest. Official bulletin notes no further updates will be issued until Sunday.
